Korean Taxi Driver Assaulted by a Foreigner.
« on: April 29, 2011, 04:29:00 pm »
I'm sure most of you have heard about a Native English Teacher assaulting a Korean taxi driver and subsequently fleeing the country. If you haven't you can have a read here http://populargusts.blogspot.com/2011/04/murderous-assault-by-assailant-american.html

What do you all think?

One word: prejudice.  An evil foreigner viciously attacked one of "us."  And he was probably drunk or high and just got done corrupting one of "our" daughters.  What else is new here or anywhere else.  Sensationalism.  The Korean media is no better than the western media.  Did you hear about the beatdown at a McDonald's in Baltimore?  Two black girls viciously beat up a white girl.  All the headlines: black girls beat up a white girl.  Read: us vs. them.  Turns out the victim was a transexual or something.  Now its a hate crime against gay thing.  Sensationalism.  Manufactured controversy.  Thats the world we live in.  Its sickening.  And good for him for fleeing the country.  Its not like he would've gotten a fair trial.

I hope he will see this post and then let us hear his side of the story. I have no doubt he has a rational and good explanation for what happened. There are too many odd things to this story.

Such a pity this sort of things happens, I am positive he reacted to his co-worker being in a fair amount of danger.

Yikes! I've been hit on by quite a few taxi drivers, so I could definitely see this being false. I like how he just gave her a friendly 'tap' on the shoulder, when she was turned. Some drivers are quite shady, though in the same breath I've had a lot of great drivers. Anyway, glad the guy who helped the girl, fled the country. I doubt he would have gotten a fair trial if the media was reporting on him like that. However, this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I wish there was some way he would be able to be tried fairly.

Hmm...
The taxi driver admitted to touching her and entering a secured area to follow her.  I'm thinking he is at least partially at fault for the events that happened.  Common sense should have told him not to burst through secured doors to grab or freindly hug  ::) women for their money (even if you think they owe it).  Different rules apply here sadly.  Would be interesting to see if there was a camera recording it.

I heard about this from a Korean point of view the first time and it sounded like a drunk American jumped some helpless cab driver. Now I see he broke into an area and was physically touching her. This changes my feelings towards it. I wish I knew the entire story though. The biggest thing I hate about here is "self-defense." If a Korean punches me in the face and I do anything about it, I probably will be kicked out of the country.

I am not a very aggressive person, but I almost got into a fight a Korean guy a few weeks ago. I got on an elevator and three drunk Koreans got on. One was so drunk he fell over onto me. I was thrown into the side of the elevator and smacked my head on the mirror. I quickly pushed him off me and his Korean friend threw me against the elevator with both of his hands. He started screaming at me and yelled "No Touch!" I moved off of the side and he went to push me again. I smacked his hands away and he went to hit me. The third guy stopped him and we reached the ground floor. I got off and left. I can see the headlines now, "American brutally assaults three defenseless Koreans."

Ha ha....... you made my day with that comment....  :) :) :) :) :)

Sad story this and it is doubtful if we will here the Americans side of the story, I am sure it is way different from what has been reported.

If self-defence were a legitimate defence against attack in this country I'd call him a coward for fleeing, but since Korea seems unable to bring its mediaeval legal code into the modern era I can't say I blame him. I suspect there's a 50/50 chance that either a bastard got off free or a bastard got exactly what he deserved. Let's hope it was the latter.

For that Baltimore incident, the two teenagers were beating the other girl because they realized she was a transexual in the girls bathroom - a very clear cut hate crime. And no one did anything to stop it. . .

Someone with a %%%%% got beaten up by some women for being in the women's toilet? It's kind of hard to feel sorry for ____ (not sure what pronoun to use here).

Yesterday I was at a restaurant and had to wait for a woman to leave the men's toilet. I'm guessing that she didn't realise there was a seperate toilet for women, two sets of toilets not always being the case in my hick town.

Thank you for being a bastion of empathy and knowledge. It's good to know a foreign country puts their children's education in your hands.

A sad but true comment about the legal system here, it is a well known fact that you as a foreigner have absolutely no chance of a fair trial here.  I really like being here in Korea and love my work etc, but I live in constant fear that if ever something should go pear-shaped here for me, legally wise, I am stuffed.

Wow reading that incredibly biased piece of "journalism" completely angered me. I love how everything has to get blamed on the damn waygooks. (ie: blaming english teachers for AIDS, when 1 in 5 korean men have admitted to having unprotected sex with prostitutes, most of which are brought here from overseas.)

Typical scapegoating from a suspicious homogenous, us-versus-them culture, I guess.  It's an attitude that seems more and more prevalent recently though...

Truly horrifying story, and I guess if even riding in a cab with a man can't stop the cab drivers from hitting on you...well, just another good reason to avoid cabs here.  The dude did the smart thing to get out of the country, too.

Are you trolling on purpose or just totally uniformed? You know this woman was kicked and punched in the head and proceeded to have a seizure. http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/bs-md-mcdonalds-beating-20110423,0,3336656.story

Seems odd that everyone is automatically taking the Native Teacher's side even though both sides of the conflict have subjective stories. There are few solid facts in all of this.

We don't really know what happened. It would be nice if the dude, or even the female teacher, posted their story. But it's always a sure bet that the Korean media will, without waiting for the facts, spin an 'evil foreigner' story in any conflict between a foreigner and a Korean.

Don't blame the guy for running though. This is a country where, even if someone is proved innocent, there'a a loud clamour to punish the person anyway to assuage 'public feeling.' This is particularly true in relation to foreigners.

I don't always take the NET's side and I do not know all of the solid facts here, but it reminds me of a friend working here three/four years ago. He was an American dating a Korean woman. They were leaving a bar and went to the bathroom down one of the famous toilet mazes in Korea. He went into the bathroom and heard his girlfriend scream. He rushed out to find a drunk Korean guy pushing his girlfriend against the wall and putting his hands in places they weren't suppose to be. He grabbed the guy and pushed him off of his girlfriend. They then turned to get out of there and the Korean punched him in the back of the head. He turned around to stop him and the Korean punched him in the side of the head. He then punched the Korean in the stomach and the Korean went down. He was later arrested for assaulting the Korean. A few Koreans heard the woman scream after her boyfriend was hit and came running. They only saw the western guy punch the Korean. After a lot of bullsh## he ended up getting kicked out of the country.

I think we shouldn't take sides here.

They were both wrong!! The driver: for entering the building uninvited; the Native Teacher: for beating the driver to that point. Like really, was the beating one way or what..

This story has so many holes, we weren't there, we don't know all the legitimate facts.
All the comments (not facts) from the blog just seem too subjective, based on how close they are to the story or their own past experiences with Korean taxi drivers.

Where is the lady in all of this?? Did she pay the dude all the fare or what??

To sympathize with the Native teacher I need more to be convinced...
