"I recently did a magic lecture for all the Korean English teachers in Wonju.
I thought I would post the powerpoint that I used.
Slide 14 is a slide of all the tricks I taught. Each title links to the pictures or videos that describe how it is done.
For the ones that link to pictures, the last picture is the link back to slide 14...confusing? Sorry!

Anyway, sometimes at the beginning or ending of a class I'll do a magic trick for the kids...the key is to use a lot of easy english.

The King of Hearts...it's my birthday trick has a story to go with it. I show the class the King of hearts and tell them it's a special day for him and give hints...once a year, cake, candles, song...until the kids guess the day...some classes have even sung the song! The Queen is on a business trip so nobody planned a party. How does the King feel? So he asks the Jacks to put a party together for him. Then ask, what do you need for a party and as the students give answers you hide a "Jack", one of the buried cards, in the deck. Then place the King, with the remaining jacks hidden behind it, on top of the deck. I then give a magic wand to a member of the class who says some magic words to call the Jacks back as they were taking so long then flip over the 4 jacks and the king.

The Shopping bag...get a student volunteer to play catch with you and have them throw a soft object up high to you. Then get an empty paper bag for the student to throw the object into. This time though, you make a "magic" ball out of thin air...a fake ball...have the student throw and catch it a couple of times and then have them throw it into the empty bag which you are holding up high with your fingers in the "SNAP" position. When they throw it you snap your fingers so the bag sounds like it is catching the magic ball.

I think the others you'll get from the pics but if you don't understand let me know.

Good luck!

Sonya"

Here's a lesson I did with a magic trick.  Watch the video and find out how to do the trick by building sentences.  I found groups of 3 worked well.  This lesson works best with a co-teacher.  It will definitely keep the kids and the teacher busy running around.  It takes some prep, but after you get everything set-up, it works really well.
