Arirang TV disdainful of "healthy" lower bodies.
« on: May 06, 2011, 12:28:58 pm »
This video is disturbing. These women are beautiful. No wonder my grade 6s say they are fat and need to diet. Saying these women need to take better care of their bodies is disgusting.

i really dont like the guy on that show.... :blank:
not that i agree with the show but the standard of "beauty" is different no matter which country we go to

just a note to some ppl that might not know: "glamorous" is konglish for "large breasts"

I can't believe how incredibly ignorant Arirang TV is--those women are gorgeous!! How are their figure spoiled by having those kind of gams? They are healthy, and I also can't believe how they turned 'healthy' into something negative!!

Wow, I have never seen a more useless tv show...

Horrible, so superficial. In fact, from the angles I saw those girls legs actually looked quite nice, but still, even if a girl does not have nice legs, what gives this show the right to scold these celebrities?

The language used in that video is irritating. I can't believe they have a problem with what I would consider normal looking legs. And I hope to never hear the term "Healthy legs" again, or at least used in that contexts. It really irritates me!!! This coming from a guy that has difficulty gaining weight in his legs.  >:(

It's disgusting that this show would make people feel poorly about themselves for being healthy - those women don't even have large legs!  It's no wonder the rate of plastic surgery is so high here, and female students expect to have it when they grow up.

This is disgusting and makes me angry! Not only do these women have beautiful bodies, but they have good reasons to have muscular legs. Many of them are not just dancers, but actresses. As a former dancer, I know how important it is to have developed muscles to achieve certain moves or high jumps.

For the actresses, how does this guy think they keep such a trim shape? Of course they exercise, so of course they have muscles! I especially hate his use of the word "healthy" like its an insult. If a woman has no calf muscles or her legs are too skinny, I personally think it's much less attractive than someone with "well-shaped" legs.

Oh yeah, and that bit about special yoga stretches is total BS! A certain amount of stretching can help you, but that alone won't change your leg shape. Not to mention the exercise they showed really only serves to strengthen your hamstrings and pelvic muscles. It's actually quite dangerous to over-stretch and you can end up with long term damage to your muscles and tendons.

Thanks Arirang for encouraging complexes and injuries!

On an off-topic note, I absolutely can't stand this guy's intonation and vocal stress. It's in all the wrong places and sooo wrong...

I suggest people write to Arirang and let them know how you feel. Maybe they'll stop airing such drivel.

:o This is unreal. I understand that ideas of beauty are different in every country, but it's just shocking to me how they turned "healthy" into something to be ashamed of... If you want to make a far stretched guess at their intention, it could be that they're trying, unsuccessfully, to point out the insecurities of these celebrities. It'd be one thing if the actors were saying "hey, I'm insecure about my thighs, and I don't think I'm perfect." ... we can related to feelings of insecurity... but for a program to be pointing out another person's flaws and say they're too "healthy" "sturdy" "muscularly developed"... from my perspective, it's crazy.

YIKES.

That was my first reaction.

To be honest, this is the first time I've ever heard the word "healthy" used as a negative thing.  I'd probably be happy if someone said that my legs looked healthy.  A little creeped out, but happy nevertheless.

Also, I'm not sure how a person who works as hard as these celebrities would go about making their leg muscles smaller.  You would almost have to confine them all to wheelchairs and eliminate all sources of protein from their diets until their leg muscles atrophied.  Gross.

Seriously...that is f'ed up. The more I live in Korea the more I see how messed up the culture is here. "Healthy" is a bad thing? WTF Korea. Yes, let's tell our kids to have sticks for legs that can't be used for anything.

I for one DON'T think Korean girls look that good. Being an absolute twig and having no curves is not attractive. Real women have breasts and a butt.

BTW, if those girls are too ugly for you, I'd be very happy to date them!  ;D

Sigh. Arirang, Arirang, Arirang.

You would think a network pretty much designed to broadcast propositive images of the country to the West would be wise enough to know this type of content doesn't exactly paint a pretty picture. At the end of the day, it harms their own image as a network so they'll learn eventually I suspect.

This video is an insult to women, I wish one of them would sue the pants off the station, but hey...that is not going to happen here nor would they succeed. It is disgusting and I am shocked that they would actually broadcast such a disgusting video. I wonder whose opinion it is that is expressed here anyway?

I don't see the problem.  It's no more superficial than any American TV show/movie/magazine/advertisement.

The narrator is being controversial, but does he represent Korea's image of itself?  Or is Arirang generating controversy to gain viewers- you all just watched 7 minutes of Arirang, and now you're talking about it.  Now a bunch of other people will take a look.  It's all about delivering eyeballs to advertisers.

I see this as a difference in culture.  Yes, it's abhorrent...in our cultures to say 'healthy thighs' are somehow bad for you.

But, after speaking to different Korean women about the beauty standard, it's seen as "attractive" to be soft and jiggly.  I remember one time, I saw my Korean friend and worriedly said, "You're so skinny!" to which she beamed and replied, "Thanks!"  Did you notice the vid's 'compliments' of skinny, doll-like, slender, etc.?

To tell the truth, I don't really find Korean women attractive.  But, after watching that segment, I couldn't help but think, 'Where are THOSE women?!'.  I'm happily engaged to my fiance, and we've spoken about the lack of booties over here.

Being less-toned is better here, just as being articially whitened, and surgically operated on.  I was just at the bus stop yesterday after hiking a bit in Daegu, and all the mid. school girls had short shorts on, and I was surprised by the amount of cellulite that these girls had...but then I thought, "It's Korea."

Also, Arirang, like CNN, has the spin machine on full blast.  As much as they criticize NKorea for propaganda, SKorea does the same in regards to mis-infoming viewers.  Just about the only thing I find of value on Arirang is the Korean lessons at midnight.

Agreed with Oskinny, I have used 'healthy' to politely describe a meatier individual, more ofther a woman.  "She eats right!!  That's one healthy girl!"  I just think we embrace...girth more than Korea.

Arirang is just one big commercial. I don't think they have any advertisers do they? It is just about showing how great Korea is to the rest of the world, that's why it is in English. They don't want to show controversy like "look at us, we're superficial and our celebrities are fatter than they should be".

As for healthy being a negative, maybe I'm showing my age but I have used and heard the term "healthy" to politely describe a fat person.

Timmy: Hey, my cousin is coming to town, you should meet her.
Billy: Wow! What's she look like?
Timmy: Well...ummm...she's healthy.
Billy: No thanks, I'm not into large women.
Timmy: But she has a great personality!!

Lord.. so women who have "healthy thighs" are perceived as fat!?
I just wanna show my thighs to Arirang and see what they say!
They are beautiful women, how are normal! What is so great seeing a woman with legs like chopsticks?!
