I would say, from what I've heard from my Korean friends and students, that the Arirang video does not actually represent the common Korean opinion on legs.

I've heard my students murmer "젓가락, 젓가락"  (chopsticks, chopsticks) whilst pointing at another girl with very skinny legs, and it wasn't in an nice way.  My Korean friends have also told me that they would like curves, or they think Western women are sexy because they tend to be curvier (although this may be the typical false flattery they say to foreigners). One of my friend's favorite celebrities is Beyonce, and she's also quite popular with my students.

I'm still upset by the message the Arirang report gives, but I'll try to rest in the fact that the regular people of Korea don't all feel that way, and the  majority of them don't watch Arirang anyway :)

I do have to say, as someone who has never been and will never be "bootylicious" I am OK with flatter shapes being seen as attractive--I think it tends to be a pretty common natural shape for some (not all) Korean women (and some non-Korean women like myself).

However...equating muscles from dancing/physical activity to 'unhealthy' is yeah, so disturbing.  Right after I read this thread, a gaggle of my middle-school girls burst into my classroom (classes are done for the day here) and started to inform me that the one "chubby" girl in the group is "very strong" but THEY are "skinny and weak!  Weak!"  They clearly saw the latter as superior.  I suppose it could be a case of "lost in translation" and maybe when they say "weak" they are going for like, "delicate" or something, but it's still not good to hear from 13-year-old girls.

Okay... so I decided to ask one of my Korean male co-teachers about this video.  We watched some of it and I asked him is this what Korean men like... women with no muscles at all.  He said that a lot of the guys like skinny legs.  I also told him about how the commentator was saying "healthy lower body" like it was a bad thing and my co-teacher said it was not a bad thing but the Korean men like skinny legs.

I'm glad I'm not from here and come from a country that does appreciate women that have a figure and are not stick people.

I'm sick of the admiration of Beyonce. Period. There are better looking and curvier Black women than this bimbo.
