Published lists like the
Rolling Stone list, &c., aren't by any means intended to be definitive. They're just conversation fodder and efforts to boost web traffic and increase sales.
Can everyone stop being so touchy about people discussing music with a little passion?
Before I came to Korea to teach I made some extra money -- my day job was being a lowly editor -- by writing for small-print and online music/entertainment sites. Most of it was just ephemeral writing about what songs/artists piqued my interest and where they fit in a cultural or historical context. Actually, I usually just took a few paragraphs to say I really liked something. There was never much use wasting ink or keystrokes on anything that didn't interest me, and I never tried doing anything as dumb as declaring so-and-so is the best or this-and-that is purely such-and-such but not that other thing. (Unnecessary blog plug:
rock-o-clock)
Anyway, long story short, there's no use whining because someone addresses a topic of interest with a little fervor and really wants to turn it inside-out thinking about it. And there's definitely no sense complaining about a list about the 500 greatest whatever because nobody with any sense really thinks the criteria and judgment is impeccable to begin with.
Also, I'm still waiting for cowboyshirt to contribute something constructive. Unless trolling is a valid train of thought...?
