Grade 3 Lesson 6 I like hamsters (bomi, buzz, bibi book)
« on: May 12, 2011, 03:10:02 pm »
This is painfully simply but I'm goign to use the Pyramid Game as my activity for this lesson:  Here's how it works.  There are 6 levels to the pyramid with a subject within each level and an animal next to it.  The students must walk around the room making the sound of the animal (so initially all students will be mooing)  they must find a student making that same noise and each student in the pair should ask "Do you like...?" of something in the subject of the level they're on.  Each student can answer either "Yes I do." or "No I don't."  Then they will play rock, paper scissors.  Quite simply, the student who wins goes on to the next level.  Not a whole lot of strategy obvioulsy but it gets them speaking English and I find they still have fun.  Oh, and once they reach the top, they come and ask the teacher.  If they beat the teacher in rock paper scissors, they become the "teacher" which they also really enjoy.  To keep order and ensure they're all speaking English, I just wander about the room.  Students who are simply playing rock paper scissors (as they're apt to do) have to sit down.

This is painfully simple but I plan to use the Pyramid Game as my activity for this lesson.
Here's how it works:
-There are 6 levels to the pyramid with a subject within each level and an animal next to it.
-The students must walk around the room making the sound of the animal (so initially all students will be mooing)
-They must find a student making that same noise and each student in the pair should ask "Do you like...?" of something in the subject of the level they're on.
-Each student can answer either "Yes I do." or "No I don't."  Then they will play rock, paper scissors.  Quite simply, the student who wins goes on to the next level.
(Not a whole lot of strategy obvioulsy but it gets them speaking English and I find they still have fun.)
-Once they reach the top, they come and ask the teacher.  If they beat the teacher in rock paper scissors, they become the "teacher" which they also really enjoy.
*To keep order and ensure they're all speaking English, I just wander about the room.  Students who are only playing rock paper scissors (as they're apt to do) have to sit down.

Being in Korea has eroded my English to the extent that I had to double-check on Google, but you mis-spelled "hamster".

Here is a link to a ppt that teaches basic pet nouns.

I have trouble getting 3rd grade to pay attention, so I am going to try turning the initial vocabulary learning into a game – like others we play in class to practice them.

Instructions:

Divide the students into groups of 4 (6 groups) – each student having a number (1 to 4).

Start with group 1 student 1 – show the slide – Ask the question, “Do you have a pet?” – The student should answer, “Yes, I have a _____” adding the word for the image.

If the student doesn’t know it, go to the #1 of the next group, and so on.

When a student gets it correct, give that team one point – then move to the next group and student and go to the next slide.

--Here is a link to a Word document with the images and nouns + the simple dialog.

Handout the document after going over the ppt. Then, have students practice the dialog using the nouns on the sheet.

Simple survey to get the students asking and answering questions.

That is a link to the class blog post where you can see images of the vocabulary I'm using with this chapter.

Below are links to review games.

Here is a PowerPoint to introduce the pets nouns.

Here is a review game for Pets and Common Foods below.  Focus on “like/don’t like”.

Here is a general review game that includes images from previous lessons – primarily Eating Utensils and Common Verbs. Focus on “What is it?” “It’s a ____.”

I've tried to use your powerpoints before but for some reason when I download them they don't work. I don't know if it's just my computer.

The PPT links should work in this post.

If the PPT link is in .pptx format, it does not work well in Internet Explorer.  You can use option 2 below to open it.

But, the .ppt format should work in IE.  Just click then answer "open" instead of save.

Below are two options for opening any PowerPoint.

Options:

1.  Use Firefox as your internet browser.  Clicking the links in Firefox will allow you to open the PPT or pptx directly in a way that works.

2.  If you are using Internet Explorer - right-click the PPT link, copy the link address - then - open PowerPoint, click to Open File - then - paste the link address.

After you have "open"ed the PowerPoint, "Save As" on your computer.  It should open for you in the future.

For me they still don't work. I don't know if there is a firewall issue or something.

Have you tried different computers?

I always check posts at home and at school.

I checked the links in this post at both, using Firefox and IE, and it is working for me.

I think you're right for some reason when it downloads something is messing it up. It's something to do with the school's network. It's strange. xe.com and mes-english.com no longer work at my schools but work perfectly at home.

I stole the format from someone else who used two balls for the pass the pencil case game. One ball will be the "question" ball and the other will be the answer

I made a Powerpoint that should give students a chance to practice all of the dialogue/speaking portions of Lesson 6 - I Love Hamsters
