High School - Simile, Metaphor, and Hyperbole
« on: May 13, 2011, 09:53:25 am »
Hi troops

I want to do a lesson on hyperbole for my very important open class, as it's a fun topic and open to drama and participation. Please could you tell me the phrases you use the most in your daily life, or ones you've heard that are funny? I want to make a PPT and a disappearing dialogue, which I will post on here when I'm done. There doesn't seem to be a similar lesson on this site:) Also, what kind of game could I play relating to it? Charades...?

Kamsayo!

PS: The PPT's are now up and are on page 2 of this thread:)

It took me forever to think of one example. :D
And I probably only use it a million times a day. (Especially with my low students)
Sounds like an excellent idea for a lesson.

I just like writing "hyperbole" on the whiteboard and listening to my students try to pronounce it. "Teacher, what is a hyper bowl?"

Haha, it should be amusing. I probably use "I'm starving" the most...

I'm starving, I'm dying, I'm melting, I'm freezing... Those are the ones I use most often.
On a related note, this T-shirt is awesome: http://www.glarkware.com/adult/hyperbole

I probably use "I'm blind as a bat" a lot (I lack the joy of 20-20 vision) or otherwise "I'm directionless as a deaf bat!"
"I nearly screamed" also usually hyperbole for very angry. "I could kill him/her!" is another for angry days :)

I 'awesome' and 'amazing' all the time when describing experiences that were probably just...good.

This is a really good idea.  I often say it takes forever and I could eat a cow.

This is a great idea. I made this up quickly. I just used it in one class, and it went ok. Please let me know if anybody has any ways to make it better!

Nice work! These look solid. Can you give us a quick idea of what you did with these materials? Just the order you used them in, and worked (or what didn't)
Thanks for this, and the original idea!

I don't know if you're looking for more material, but here's some things I say that I haven't seen in the other replies:

You're killing me here/You're gonna kill me, etc (often said to students who say something staggeringly wrong or stupid :P)
I'm gonna die/I wanna die
I'm going crazy/This is crazy, etc
It's the end of the world/The world is ending
I'm in heaven/something is heavenly

I abuse the words best/worst/love/hate/general superlatives a lot through overuse too, although I'm not sure that counts.

OK! Here we go, the best PPT and disappearing dialogue ever made!!!! I'll also play pictionary with them if there's time, using the hyperbole examples learnt in class. Hope it's ok:)

Fun!  These are great materials, and I especially like that you included thorough pre-teaching and a review!  One little quibble with the "Hyperbole PPT Lindsay" file.  On slide 15, it says "You are not Flash Gordon!" but the picture is actually of "The Flash," which is a different super hero.  Flash Gordon is a pre-Star Trek sci-fi hero, actually.  Your students maybe didn't catch this, because when I taught a lesson on superheroes about 3 weeks ago, only about 10 of my 550+ students recognized The Flash enough to speak up about him in class.  ...but just for accuracy's sake, thought it was best to say something. :)  Yeah, I'm a geek. hehe

I do like the materials though, and I have been looking for some stuff on hyperbole recently.  This should be fun to do with my mid/low level high school students.  Thanks for posting the materials!
