Ah, bugger! Thanks for spotting that! I'm using this for my open class next week and it would have sucked to be corrected in front of adults!

How'd this lesson go with your students? And how do you usually do a disappearing dialogue? have never done one before.

This went down a treat, if I do say so myself. I had the principal taking part in the class as though she were a student! The dialogue was just right for the very high level of the class, so I'd change it for lower levels.

It's pretty easy to do. It's all repetition and memory but in a competitive way. I have them say the full dialogue twice, and then i start clicking the slides. They have to say the entire dialogue for each slide, so that by the time it gets to the end and there aren't any words, they've got it down. The saying it alone thing it tough for this one, even I needed prompts, but it's a good challenge. I also had them do it boys vs girls, which was fun.

Excellent idea and execution!
With the heat, my students lose attention for anything too serious. They fall asleep the second they sit down (can't stop myself). I was thinking of doing onamonapia, but hyperbole way more useful.

Fantastic!! Just used this with my after school conversation class with many varying levels - I had them write down in their books what the hyperbole and real meaning were and after come up with their own examples. Even for students who have trouble coming up with their own words, between myself and them, miming and acting out the actions was hilarious! we were both cracking up over it - especially eat like a pig.
Good work!

High School - Simile, Metaphor, and Hyperbole
« Reply #27 on: October 09, 2011, 11:49:19 am »
I wanted to do something a little different with my 3rd graders so I put together a little unit on figurative speech.  I included a handout the first day that the students brought to class every week of the unit as reference material.   On the first day, we practiced similes.  Each of the students was given a card with an adjective/adjective phrase.  I would name an object (always something from their lists so they can find it if need be) and students would stand if they thought their adjective was an appropriate match.  If it was, then the students would use their adjective phrase and the given object to create a simile.  I had them help me make grammar examples beforehand on the board for reference and I did an example to get us started.

The second lesson in the unit focused on metaphor and included simile.  The cards were printed such that they were color coded to denote subject, figure, or literal meaning.  Before the students began their translations from figurative to literal speech, I found it helpful to go through the slides and cover major vocabulary points.  Figurative bingo actually turned into a third lesson all of its own and was kind of a nice review activity before the last day of the unit.

I'm glad you liked it  ^^

Also, I just remembered.  I think I did a fourth week with them where I gave them outlined pictures of a  generic heroine and had them color her and add weaponry, etc. and then describe her powers using figures of speech.  I gave them ~20 minutes to color and write and then they spent the last 30 presenting their heroines to the class and voting among the top 3 (selected by me) for the best one.  Was a nice ending, as my hs students really seem to enjoy drawing.

Can you give some examples of the kids of objects you would say for the final game? And then what kind of sentence would the student put together.

Ex. You would say "pig" and the student with the card "to eat impolitely" would say "The old man eats like a pig"?

Just trying to make sure I understand the activity before I try it out later this week. Thanks for any additional details you can give on that!

That's exactly right.  Additionally, I encouraged the students to choose appropriate subjects for their sentences (ex. classmates, family members, teachers, famous people) so I also got sentences like "I.U. sings like an angel."  and "Eun-ji is as blind as a bat.".  All of the necessary grammar information for building a sentence was written on the board so that students just needed to plug their subjects, objects, adjectives, verbs, or whatever into the appropriate blank.  (S. is as 형용사 as a 명사.   S. 동사(s) like a 명사.)

Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole. Lesson with music videos.
« Reply #36 on: December 01, 2011, 09:16:30 am »
I downloaded a lesson off of waygook (can't remember the thread). I used their lesson as a base and added music videos as motivation and an in class review at the end, as well as reformatted the PPT. It runs the whole 50 minutes. My plan is to have a part two lesson with one more concept, some review and a game. I haven't written the part two yet, but when I do, I'll upload it here.

Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Here is an additional Hyperbole PPT if you would like to use it. Hope that it helps and that you will be able to find it useful  :D
