Solvent Abuse
« on: May 16, 2011, 05:04:51 PM »
This seemed appropriate as there's been a lot of talk about what kind of behavior is unacceptable on public transport lately.

Whilst taking the bus in the middle of the day I traveled with three middle school aged boys, who had taken the back seat. They were all sitting with their sweaters pulled up over their noses and their arms retracted inside their sweaters. Every so often there would be a soft rustling sound, the sound of an aerosol and a billowing as they huffed the paint they were squirting into plastic bags beneath their sweaters. They seemed to be having a good time and the back of the bus stank of paint. None of the other passengers seemed to have a clue what they were up to.

I know smoking and drinking is a problem from middle school upwards, but are solvents in again? That's a dirty habit.

That's bad. And because things like that are so hush-hush here, I doubt those kids know just how bad huffing paint is.

My school is pretty straight edge, and we don't even have students smoking in our bathrooms, but yeah. Getting in the paint and glue is going to mess those kids up.
