for lesson 2 in the book, i used the activity suggested in the book which worked well.. along with a "blind fold" game, in which i blindfolded a student and used the desks as "blocks"   one student gives the blindfolded student directions around the classroom (to wherever you choose)

For the last period, I used google maps to do a project/test.  Students navigated my neighborhood using google maps.  For this lesson, I needed google maps, a "missions" powerpoint, large foam boards with directions, and little maps to hand out to all my students.

I made a simple powerpoint with the mission, "Miss Kirra needs to go to a family dinner."  There were 6 "sub-missions" on it.  (There are six groups in my classes).  The missions were things like "Miss Kirra needs to get her brother and sister from the park.  Find the park."  I included pictures of family members.

I wrote directions to the park on a large foam board.  I used one foam board for each sub-mission.  I used different colors for different parts of the directions (like street names in red and left, right, straight in blue).

Google maps starts out at my house.  One group is randomly assigned the first sub-mission, which is to go to the park.  One student from the group reads the instructions aloud.  Another student listens to the instructions and follows them on my computer.  The rest of the students watch in awe.

I have done this activity in one class so far, and I didn't use individual maps for it.  I made them for the remaining two classes, though.  (My co-teacher wants something to display).  A map for each student isn't absolutely necessary, but it gives all the students something to do.  I took a screen shot of my neighborhood on Google maps.  Then, I transfered it to paint and marked the location of my house.  Students will hopefully follow along on their maps, and draw the park, etc. on their maps.

My students seemed to enjoy this activity.  I am not uploading anything because
a.  It is specific to my neighborhood and my family.
b.  I am hesitant to post instructions to my house, my siblings school, my church, my siblings names and photos, etc., on a public forum.

Re: Grade 6 Lesson 2 - Is This York Street?: Box activity
« Reply #185 on: April 07, 2011, 07:35:09 pm »
I only have 7 sixth graders, but I really wanted them to understand the concepts of prepositions.  I showed them the "Where's Shompy" song I saw on this website.  Then, we made a really simple oragami box together.  I had each student pick a piece of paper from a can.  The slips read either in, on, under, over, in front, behind or between.  The students had to write their words on a piece of paper and attach it to a box.  The word "under" had to be under the box and "over" had to be over the box.  They liked this a lot.  After, I made them sing "Where's Shompy" again, but this time, they only said their word.  They had a lot of fun.

I made this box:

People are probably past this unit now, but this is just a simple prezi introducing directions. It's not much, I know; I don't have powerpoint on my computer and the school's is all in Korean, so this was the best option:

Feel free to use any of the other prezis posted as well!

As this topic is a little dry I used one of the High School posts and adapted it for the lesson. Link was from Sheila earlier on in this thread.
It pretty much teaches the students about the vocabulary used when giving directions on the subway. I used Busan's subway system as it is easier to follow than Seoul's.
I also adapted the matching worksheet so the Ss could practice with their partner. I was a bit worried about this but it worked surprisingly well. I photocopied the Busan subway map onto the back of the worksheet for easy access.
I also made a board game to go with the lesson.

My coteacher and I have stuck to the washing machine story, but have added activities to make it more interesting. This is a text maze I created to go with the second part of the story. My classes really liked it.

For a non-PPT game, we played The Whisper Game (or Chinese whispers). We made the class form 2 lines on either side of the classroom and then whispered a direction into the ear of the student in the front, who had to whisper it to the next student in the line etc etc. When the phrase gets to the end of the line, the last student in the line has to shout it out. Whoever shouts it out first wins. My co-teacher and I made sure to walk along the line and check that they were all saying the sentence and helped where students were having problems. It also helps if you make them pass a ball/dice while they are saying the phrase as it keeps the phrase going in the correct sequence.

In terms of games, for the first unit in this lesson i introduced the prepositions that we will be using and as a small activity i had students volunteer one at a time. The volunteer would then close his/her eyes while i hid a candy in one of the desks in the class. Then i would give them directions between the desks (using each desk as one block) in order for them to find the hidden candy.

[Mod - MERGED]

oh sorry, i forgot to attach the power point to the same lesson (lesson 2 period 1). I've used some slides from other power point presentations that i found here on this site.  I also added some new slides to introduce new vocabulary of places. It's nothing fancy..but it's a good way to just introduce the topic and then go on the the activities.

Our class did a similar exercise with prepositions, but Instead of using the classroom, it is nice to play in a larger area. like a hall if you have one. We also blindfolded the students and were directed by fellow students

This is a listening/reading/speaking activity. Each student has a map and the direction cards are face down. The first student reads the directions, without saying the name of the building. The students must listen and find the correct building.
Even my wild kids calmed down and participated in this activity!

Also we did a listening exercise where you put the lyrics in order to Amarillo. We taught our students the additional phrases, "Show me the way" and "Is this the way..."

Game idea for teaching "directions"

-Spy game: one student is taken outside of the classroom while a secret spy (or multiple spies) is chosen in the classroom. Bring the student back in, blindfold him/her, and have the students direct him to the spy. They have to say "go left, go right, go straight, turn around." The kids love it and really gets them talking. You can also move the desks around to create a maze for even more fun!

Worksheet and video + disappearing dialogue for Period 1

I've never laughed so much since I came to Korea. This is comedy gold. The children completely go nuts! Nearly fell off my seat laughing.

Here's a  quick ppt./game I used to intro the idea that Streets are not, in fact, all titled "street." That way the students would understand that  "Street," "Lane," "Blvd." are all in a sense the same. (Dunstan Lane is my house at home, feel free to insert your own home here, they students really liked seeing where I live!)
