here's a class one intro for the target vocab.  for 'in front of', 'behind', and 'between' first ask them "Where is/are the _____ [girl, birds, baby]?".  thought it might help.

enjoy!!!!!!!~~

Question...

Would you say "Where is the Sejong Building?" or "Where is Sejong Building?"

I wanna drop the 'the' because it is the name of the building.

i.e. "Where is the school?" / "Where is Seoul Elementary School?"

The grade 4 version of this chapter taught the difference between "Where is the bank" and "Where is ABC Bank" so hopefully it wont confuse your kids if you say "Where is Sejong Buillding"

Although, sometimes saying the "the" makes sense. You would say, "Where is the Petronas Tower" not "where is Petronas Tower"

I made a modified version of Sheila's term ppt.  I added a few more slides and changed around some.  Check it if you're interested.

My coteachers are leery about this, but I made a Prezi map of a city with different places on it.  I had to make it more of a grid than what it was originally.

http://prezi.com/vqfrlj9ss9pk/maze/

I plan on asking students how to get from place to place (post office to mall).  They will use the template Go direction on street and turn direction on street. (its on the powerpoint, second to last slide.)  They can work in groups to say the directions to each other.  Once they practice among themselves then we go over it in the class.  There are other ways to use this...and I might change the method depending on how the classes take it.

Handout teaches:
  • Turn right/left
  • Go straight
  • In front of
  • Behind
  • Between
  • Next to
  • Corner

How I'm using it
1. Teach directions in a PPT
2. Hand out WS
3. Show filled-out WS on the screen
4. Students copy it
5. Students glue it in their notebooks

Do you guys think it's a good WS?  I think it might be too cluttered or confusing, not sure though.  I would love to get some feedback on it's design and whether or not your students could understand it.  Thanks!

Hi everyone,

This is a great song to review and extend prepositions. My 6th graders absolutely adore this song and know the chorus after just one lesson. Put the chorus lyrics on the board and have them sing along around the end of the class perhaps. Hope someone can find it good motivational material for the next Lesson 2 class. Cheers.

This is what I use for my first class. I go over the vocabulary and have the students practice making sentences. The when the maps come up I have the students make more sentences. On the second map I assign the houses to different students in the class and ask them how to get to each others houses.

Finally I play a hot seat game. Split the class into two groups. Have one student from each group come to the front and sit in a chair with their back to the screen. The other students have to use hand gestures or words other than what the picture is to get the student to guess the picture. They love it.

Here is what I made for Period 1 for Lesson #2.

This PPT is with Doraemon. The students help Doraemon get to certain directions on the map. I didn't do prepositions as this will be taught later in the Lesson.

I have 2007 and 1997-2003 compatible PPT files.

I will add my game for the lesson in another post as the files are too big for one.

Here is the game I used for lesson 2 and during my winter camp. You should do the first couple directions with the students and show them how to read the map. The game needs about 20-25 minutes in total (includes going over the answers). Students will need scissors, glue, the map, and location cards. Hope that this is useful.

Time to contribute to this fabulous resource.

I use the following as a simple activity for this chapter. I call it 'the left, right, u-turn game' for apparent reasons.

I pre-write any combinations of the directions above (L, R, U). I also write an arrow underneath the last direction denoting the final direction that the student should face if they have followed the directions properly. I begin simply and slowly so that the whole class can participate in at least a couple of rounds. Thus, firstly I might write LLR (with an arrow under R for the final direction. Secondly and still slowly, I might do RURL. Thirdly and a little quicker, RULLU. This is done until you get quite long chains and are going quickly. All the class get a go. The weaker ones are involved, and it satisfies the more able as they last longer and have to think fast.

I think it's a game that works well.

Many thanks to Dessa for posting the map game, who thanked the original poster, from March 17th.
This is tailored to this year's book.  My classes had trouble putting the directions in perspective, so the first 2 slides were meant to clear any confusion.

Check the Korean on the 'practice' PPTs!
and I'm using the treasure map story found here: http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,3448.msg36857.html#msg36857

You supply some great PP's and games.  Simple and effective.  Much appreciated.

Pronunciation/Phonics activity to begin one of the lessons for "Is this York Street?"

If you've missed previous posts regarding phonics, feel free to PM me to find out how I use the materials to begin my classes as opposed to the ole: Hello, How are you? How's the Weather? routine.

Not sure if these materials will be helpful to anyone, just thought i'd upload them anyways.

The powerpoint goes over the names of common landmarks or buildings (bank, school, etc). It includes directions and different direction terminology. The worksheet has a map (also included in the powerpoint), which asks students to figure out where certain buildings are located by using the terminology learnt in the powerpoint. Not sure if it will be too difficult for my kids or not.

As a side note, the map I put in the worksheet has really small images that are difficult to identify, therefore when I print out the map I plan on writing the names of the actual places underneath the pictures, so the kids can understand what they are looking at.

I did a matching pairs game for this lesson too... it's a good game to get the kids to speak.. make them say the word / sentence when they reveal what is behind the squares.

This isn't my template, so thanks to whoever made it.

Click on the silver circles to recover the images.

Help! I remember using the preposition hand gesture... It was sped up each round.  Does anybody remember? Does anybody have the video link or file? It was really good and fun.
