GEPIK-early leave, what happens to vacation days????
« on: June 16, 2011, 11:36:21 AM »
I'm with GEPIK and will be giving my 1 month notice next week. I will have been here over 6 months. Does anyone know how vacation works for this? We get 20 days of vacation for the whole year. Does that mean that we roughly are entitled to 10 days per 6 months? I took 5 days in Feb, since I was just deskwarming. I'm wondering if I will have to pay them back? I'm not so worried about "using" all of vacation days before I leave, but I do have 3 days of deskwarming next week and am wondering if I am entitled to those 10 days and should ask to use them for those 3 days. Does anyone have any experience or advice? Thanks!

Technically they are supposed to prorate your vacation days. If you had taken more than 10 days, they would have asked you to "pay back" the extra days. But losing your vacation days would be in their financial interest, so I wouldn't be surprised if they said something like you aren't entitled to it since you didn't uphold your contract. Doesn't hurt to ask though.

Source: My GEPIK regional coordinator (about pro-rating vacation days and paying it back).

I thought that with GEPIK, if you were past the 6 months mark and gave your 1 month notice, all bets were off as far as paying anything back goes?

And OP do you mean "pay back" by working or "pay back" financially??

@Cindy: thanks!
@Woman-king: I mean financially. Like, would they take the days that they had paid me for vacation out of my final pay or something.

I just e-mailed my GEPIK coordinator, and she confirmed what you said, Cindy. Vacation days are pro-rated, so 6 months of work equals 10 days of vacation. Since I have only taken 5 or 6, I'm totally fine-will not need to pay them back. Thanks to those who replied!  :)

I too am planning on cutting out early after reaching 6 months so this answered my question about vacation.  Is there anything else to consider besides vacation? How about the 900,000 deposit we gave in the beginning of the contract? Or the round trip ticket home that was included for the renewal bonus?

Unfortunately, you only the ticket home if you finish the 1 year. I just bit the bullet and paid $1200 for my way home...but it's so worth it! As for your deposit, as long as you give your 30 days notice (if your GEPIK) you should get your deposit back (also assuming you didn't trash your apartment!). They will take out your final utilities and according to your contract, have 14 days to refund the remainder (although I have heard varying stories on how quickly or not people get their money back. Depends on the school.). If you signed your contract after 01/01/11, GEPIK now requires you to pay back your 300,000 settlement fee, even if you completed 6 months (if you leave at any time you now, must pay this back). The only other thing I can think of is sick days, if you used any. Should be prorated though too.

Perhaps you should just consider losing them
