Finger Prints
« on: May 16, 2011, 10:12:48 AM »
Does anyone know where I can get my fingerprints taken.  As an American I am now required to complete the FBI background check and I need to send them a set of finger prints.

-Thanks

I was told we don't need the FBI check until we renew in 2012, if you choose to do so, but you can get fingerprinted at any of the larger police stations, I believe.

you can get them done at major police stations here in Korea.  Although(i may be wrong) they do have to be put onto an FBI fingerprint form

you can download it or go to your local FBI office to obtain one. I litterlly knocked on the door and the security guard gave me a set of cards. Then, I went to a downtown police station to get the prints because only certain stations ( at least in Buffalo ) do the FBI background check prints.

Hope it helps :)

I haven't done it yet, but if you have the finger print form, you need to bring it to pretty much any "city" police station, meaning a "Gu" 구 or metropolitan police station. You have to go to the Criminal Invesigation Unit and they will do them for free.

I will take my co-worker with me and do it next month. If you go, make sure to bring someone who speaks Korean. Also, you should do about three to five sets of finger prints because finger prints suck and are terrible at coming out well. You can have several sets rejected by the FBI for being sloppy. Also, read the FBI guide on how to roll your fingers and whatnot.

Good Luck!!!

I did it in Korea a little while ago. I lived in Ilsan which is a pretty big city, but I just went to my local police station and told them that I needed fingerprints ( i mimed it as well). They sent me to the CSI guys and they printed off two cards in English, took my prints, and stamped everything in a matter of about 10 minutes. It was super easy and it was all free. I hope that everyone else has such an easy time with it. Good luck.

P.S.- The FBI check takes a solid 2.5-3 months. Then the Dept. of State say it only takes 15 business days, but mine took way, way longer and they never responded to my e-mails and they don't take phone calls. Just a heads up. It was extremely frustrating.

I thought it was any time after January 2011.

Does anyone know if there are any police stations that would be open on Saturdays?

I would start the FBI process sooner rather than later.  If the fingerprints area at all smudged they will send it back.
It takes several weeks to get the background check, then you have to send it to D.C. for an apostile.  Once it gets to D.C. it takes 15 days for them to apostile (verify) it and return it to you so you can submit it.

I went to D.C. to have it apostiled to expedite the process.  It is a small office in a strop mall that is open 4 days a week for 3 hours a day.  The office is full of bike couriers who just bring documents and wait for them to be apostiled.  It takes about 1 hour for them to get to your document.  I asked the bike carriers, they said that they charge about $250 for their service.

Long story short:  start the process now.

Jon Pak, the head of SMOE or whatever he is, told me specifically in person and email that it's anytime after January 2012. I asked him multiple times to confirm that the date was correct, and he said yes, 2012. However, I've heard other things from other people, so who knows. I think there was a whole thread about this maybe a month back.

Ummm...sorta.  I think i remember reading when i signed up with epik last winter that the FBI highly recommends that you have it done on the actual fingerprint card made out of cardstock.  The police station or wherever will have them.

Also, call your police station and ask them if they do imprinting for FBI fingerprint checks.  They almost all do, but sometimes they do them at different places or have certain hours where they do checks.  For example, my hometown only did them on Thursdays from 5-7pm at the county jail.  However, the town next to me did them every day during standard business hours.  It's also gonna cost you anywhere from between probably $10 to $30.

Mine were free. And they did it anytime that anyone from the CSI office was around (which is usually normal business hours). I printed off the form from the FBI page and went to my city police station (the big one, not the smaller ones). It took maybe 10 mins and the guy seemed to know what needed to happen. I put my prints on two forms though just in case one of the forms wasn't legible. It was very easy...but there are quite a few foreigners in my area so someone else may have already done the grunt work and made it easy for me.

I feel bad saying I cannot answer your question BUT I am just curious--how did you find out they'd rejected your fingerprints?  How much longer after you had sent out the original ink fingerprint card did they respond??  I mailed out my national background check packet about a month ago and have heard nothing back, and have been told it is really difficult to get ahold of them by phone or email.

more than likely you won't hear anything back for a few more weeks at least. it's not like you ordered a package from amazon.com unfortunately :/ you simply can't really follow it up. you'll know, when you know :P

I mailed my request on the 29th of December and received them somewhere in the middle of February.  They should have returned a letter back saying that they had received your documents and they are being processed.  This document also included a verification number for any future inquiries.  I'm pretty sure you can contact them through email or telephone, though you might have to dig around for any contact info.  As far as your fingerprints go, you might have just sent a bad print.  When I made mine, I had 3 copies done and mailed two of which with all of the other documents.  Use the credit card option on your form and make sure to mail it with an express envelope for its return.  I suggest making it as easy as possible for it to be processed and returned.  Sounds a little like overkill but sometimes you can't afford any hick-ups.  Always best, when dealing with that kind of bureaucracy…is to make it as efficient as possible and to make multiples of everything.  Hope this helps, good luck.
