I took photos of the characters in the book for 3rd grade

I realize this is late, but I am trying to upload all my materials. Plus, We haven't been going in order with the 3rd grade.

For this lesson, I reviewed the words first with the powerpoint. Then each student folded a piece a paper in fours, ripped them apart, and drew a gift (had quite a few nintendos). They then went around the room giving out their gifts and said:

"Happy birthday! This _____ is for you" or just "This is for you."
"Thank you"
"You're welcome"

We then reviewed with a true or false game (can be done before too-- I don't remember the order anymore). Students make an O if the sentence matches the picture or an X if it does not.

This is a board game the students can play in pairs.

Has anyone tried to give gifts (small) to a class of about 20 students? I was thinking about doing this and having them exchange gifts and practise giving presents.

Here's a slides and ladders board game that I made by adapting the one posted above.

Another game idea:
Pair the students.  Give each student 3 coins, slips of paper, or whatever.  They take turns taking on coin, putting their hands behind their backs, putting the coin in one hand, then bringing their hands in front.  Once their hands are in front of them, they say "This is for you.  Open it."  The other student tries to choose the correct hand to get the coin.  The student with the most coins is the winner.

Stole the ppt from anna0605 and added some birthday vocab and 2 video clips. They love the clip of the kid opening his present!

Once they'd practiced the key expressions with me and with their partners I handed out 3 blank slips of paper to each student. They had to choose 3 friends and write one name on each slip of paper. They then had to walk around giving the slips to their friends and using the dialog.

Also, I haven't tried this yet but for the next period I plan to use a speed game. I'll split them into 2 teams. One team will sit and watch and the other team will form a straight line. I'll give the first person a gift. They should turn to the person behind them and say the dialog(see below) the next person then does the same until they reach the last person. I'll time both teams and the quickest team wins. If time permits I'll do it as a best out of 3 game. Here's the dialog,

A: Happy birthday! This is for you.
B: What's this?
A: Open it.
B: Wow, thank you!
A: You're welcome.

This lesson was just to easy and the thought the students would get bored so I changed the title to happy birthday, how old are you so they learn number which I feel is important.

This is a really great song and the students did really well with it (I'm surprised only 5 people have downloaded it so far!). Next we did a Role Play, scripted with a PPT, then a bit of the textbook, and then an activity, which followed up on the Role Play.  The students gave "gifts" to each other, the "gifts" being pictures they drew and words they wrote. The "gifts" were put in a small Paris Baguette bakery box which had to be "opened", thus utilizing the target vocabulary.  Four students who had their birthdays in May were singled out for a mini-Birthday Party, where the Ss received the "gifts" which had been made as an activity, with the accompanying vocabulary.
The innovation here was that all of the dialogue between the co-teachers, and between the teachers and the class, was scripted, and the script was illustrated by a PPT which flashed behind us. (I have one of those wireless remote clicker things that comes in handy for this).

There was also some pared down pair work. Students had trouble reading this initially, but responded well to it and picked up a few things along the way.  Note the icons in the top right of the screen to denote who is speaking.

To add a little fun I went to the store and got a bunch of those chincy cone birthday hats. Students played rock paper scissors to find out who's birthday it way. They got to wear the hats and that was person B in the conversation. They went nuts. Then they would be person B in the conversation and accept the 'gifts' from the other students.
