You get a grand total of 18 vacation days, 8 per vacation. They cannot count Saturdays and Sundays. We have national holidays, Saturdays, and Sundays off.

I just had a meeting with my co-teacher about Summer Vacation. He told me I'm able to have 5 days for holiday. I don't have my contract to hand, but I'm pretty sure in the contract it states I can have 8 days. I questioned my co-teacher about this and  the principal is apparantly counting Saturday and Sunday as my vacation days. At this stage I've just queried the decision as my contract is at home. However, I'm assuming this isn't normal... am I right? I'm working in elementary school and have a standard EPIK contract.

Same happened to me over Winter. I had a 30 minute debate with the head of English over it pointing out that I never work Saturdays and Sundays anyway so why would I need to use my vacation days on Saturdays and Sundays? He claimed that the Korean contract states that I would have to use my vacation on Saturday and Sunday. After some more talking (during which I stayed very calm and reasonable) we came to an arrangement where, after the Winter camp (I did 5 weeks and 3 days total over the Winter period), I would be given the final Thursday and Friday of the last week off (my last winter camp finished on a Wednesday) the following Saturday and Sunday off and that my official vacation would start on Monday. The extra days not desk-warming cancelled out the lost weekend days and I had about the same amount of vacation time and he got to say that he had followed the letter of the contract.

If you argue about this, I suggest you do it calmly, point to the contract where it says you never work weekends and keep it up calmly for a while. Don't appear stressed or disappointed, just keep going. Think of a few different ways of saying the same thing. You might just reach a compromise too.
In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

We are not "guests" in Korea. Korea didn't invite us over for Pimms in the garden. We are paid employees.

EPIK holidays - summer
« Reply #22 on: July 01, 2011, 11:36:02 am »
Hi people,

SO I started an EPIK contract on 22nd June,

I have been reliably informed that I need to use up my holiday allowance before a certain date,

but I'm unsure what this date is - anyone know?

Any good ideas for a cheap, nice place to go for a week in the summer - emphasis on the CHEAP!

Hi there, Ive looked through the posts and maybe I've missed it but-  if my school has told me that i don't need to come in if I'm not teaching a summer camp and the time off exceeds my vacation days allotted...then I'm not paid for those days correct?
In addition,  if I'm not teaching a winter camp and not desk warming, can I kiss two month's pay and my severance pay goodbye?

I haven't heard of a NET not having to do deskwarm AND camp. You're supposed to get paid regardless (monthly salary and severance).
Of course, I would double check with your school about that.

Cheers pal.
Brought my contract in on Friday and showed it to my co-teacher. He said he'd talk to the principal again. Thankfully my co-teacher is quite respected in the school and a pretty good guy, so he sorted everything out.

Found out today I have the 8 days vacation.
