Bomb game for entire class period?
« on: May 20, 2011, 11:53:33 AM »
I need to do a review of a unit and was thinking of doing a giant bomb game...45 questions. This will likely take up most of the class if not all of it. Has anyone done a bomb game for that long? (Or any one activity for that length of time?) Just wondering if the kids will get too bored or what.

I've done a bomb game with 33 questions for the entire class period. The trick of it is to keep things competitive. If one team gets so far behind that its hopeless, they'll just give up. The good thing about bomb games is that they are random!

My biggest problem has been with the questions. At first they were too easy, now they are too hard. Still trying to find that middle ground. Also, going in order gets really boring for teams. Sometimes the last team in my class will just mess around b/c they know that it takes about 3-5 minutes till it is their turn. So I just have a sheet of random commands, and whichever team follows it first gets to go. (First team to put their notebooks under their arms, etc.).

I've certainly done whole-class games before, though not a bomb game. I think it would be fine as long as the questions are a bit varied. My advice would be to have a few backup activities so that you can cut it short if it's really not going well. Otherwise go for it.

I have each grade once a week for after school, so we usually do a review game of whatever they've been doing in their morning classes, and it usually takes up the entire period.  I start the classes by going over the key phrases and vocabulary (I have a review slideshow I do with them), then we play the game.  I'd suggest you prepare backup material in case they do get bored, but I've also had classes stay after the bell to finish up a game, so really, whether or not they'll get bored is entirely dependent on their attitude.  Bomb game is good because it's hard for a team to get and maintain a lead for very long.  The same is true of any game where the questions are progressively worth more points (assuming the kids know this ahead of time).

I say go for it. The kids sort of need a fun day every now and then... at most schools I think it's only really a problem if you do it all the time.
This is a crisis. A large crisis. In fact, if you got a moment, it's a twelve-story crisis with a magnificent entrance hall, carpeting throughout, 24-hour portage, and an enormous sign on the roof, saying 'This Is a Large Crisis'.

I've used Jeopardy twice as a review and always do it for an entire lesson.  During the game, they have explain certain concepts or I review reasons why certain answers don't match the question.  Having said that though, it only works for an entire lesson if you haven't used the game in class before - the second time we did a review, Jeopardy wasn't as successful although the students were happy to play a game for the entire lesson because we don't often play games.  This was all for high school second grade.

How in the world can you play a "Bomb" game for an entire class period?  Do you play 2 X's?
Do tell? What is the name of the lesson you played this game>
Thanks........I think........ ;)
