2010 Grade 4, Lesson 3: "This Is My Friend"

Once again, I'm sitting at my desk at a loss for ideas when it comes to planning a class for the fourth graders. Specifically, I'm looking for an activity that the students can do, and not the one in the book. Ordinarily, I'd look to the teacher's guide, but the English one on MediaFire is for last year... and I'm just not feeling up to translating the Korean one.

An entire review chapter stretched over two weeks is a bit much.

What period are you trying plannning?  Period 1 doesn't even introduce the target language of "This is my friend" yet.  That's in Period 2. 

If you are doing period 1 - then it's basically just weather and review of the expressions from period 2. 

Here's a PPT that I'm using with my class. 
1. The first few slides are just a review of the weather expressions (It's cloudy. It's raining.)
2. Then it's quiz time.  I give the 1st student in each row cards lettered A thru E. 
3. When I show them a picture (some pictures I quickly show, and then click back to hide it), the students have to race to find the correct letter that matches the answer.  When they find the card, they stand up.  And then I have the whole class say the correct answer together.  And then I award that row/team 1 point.
4. Mixed in with the weather pictures are pictures from Lesson 2 (Watch out! Are you ok?)

This can be used as the game or simply just a practice activity after the listen and repeat section.

Again...it's best used for period 1 since it does not include any of the new expressions such as "This is my friend."  But feel free to adapt as you'd like.

I was doing period 1, with a brain fart. I just taught it on Wednesday, and ended up doing a "BINGO" activity with the students. They had to go around the room and ask nine different students, "What kind of weather do you like?", emphasizing the "do you like" part. Then they would answer using the pattern "I like ___ days." To call the answers, my co-teacher and I had the students ask in unison, "Do you like ___ days?" If the answer was yes, they could mark it off, but they couldn't if the answer was no. It worked well.

For 2차시 we played "charades" with the sentence patterns "Don't ____!", "Look at the _____!" and "I like _______ days". We also learned the song, "Mr. Sun"... the karaoke version of which is available on YouTube thanks to icnelly. My co-teacher took the students that struggle with even basic phonics out of the class to work with them and explain the game, while I taught the song to the other students. They rejoined to play the game.

Now I'm working on 3차시, looking at the recommended activity, "The Whisper Game". Any ideas for 3차시  would be great...!

Yes they have to write down the answer on paper.   Can a designated writer for each team.   Depending on level of students,  you can be lienent or tough on punctuation.    For grade four, I think getting the sentence in correct order is most important.

For "Blazing Pens", or any other writing game, I usually give one team each a white board, marker, and eraser. It seems to work relatively well.

For 3차시 today, my co-teacher and I decided it would be best to take the time to go over phonics with the kids, since the national curriculum doesn't really seem to cover it. We did the "Phonics Alphabet ABC Song" (which can be found on YouTube), and the students had to work together in their groups to come up with a consensus of how to write the sound of the letters in 한글. Then we played the "Name Game" which can be found at http://www.genkienglish.net/phonics.htm, and ended the lesson with a spelling game.. using those white boards.

I might use the "Blazing Pens" for 4차시 Friday, though, thanks!
