Leslie in Cali wanting to teach in Seoul

(1/3) > >>

PuuOnToast:
Hello,
My name is Leslie and I live in socal. I have already been accepted by JET but really want to go to Korea as a part of EPIK.
Nice to meet you all!

jih:
I'd accept the JET position.  Japan's JET program is a lot more difficult to get into then EPIK.  In terms of location, most people seem to have a more favorable opinion of Japan and is culture over Korea.  After you've completed your JET contract and you still want to see Korea, do it then.

PuuOnToast:
Thats true but I have several reasons for choosing Korea.
I studied abroad in Tokyo for a year
I don't want to live in the country.
I like Korean culture more than Japanese (most of the time)
and its cheaper to live in Korea.

Haven't turned down the JET position though, just in case...

janicesamsun:
It's not really that cheap to live in Korea, ESPECIALLY Seoul, and you'll be generally making more money in JET.

I can agree with not wanting to work in a rural area.  But doesn't EPIK have a whole lot of rural positions?

It's up to you, but I got rejected by JET about 6 years ago.  I'd have taken it in a heartbeat.

Stefan Teacher:
It's toss-up. Jet program is much tougher to get into. But Korea asks for a lot of paperwork and SMOE requires you to write an essay as to why you want to work HERE.

Yes, Seoul CAN be expensive. You do make more money if you teach in a rural location. There, you will probably be teaching at 2 or more schools (for extra money) and get a rural allowance (extra money)...maybe 200k to 300k won a month. Also, if you are in a rural location there are less ways to engage in behavior where you are likely to spend money.

Be aware...nothing is THAT far from Seoul....the whole country is 1/4 the size of California... and there are bullet trains connecting major cities... Incheon and Suwon are connected to the Seoul subway system....

EPIK contracts typically start March 1st and September 1st... they are taking applications now for September... go to the EPIK website ,,,there is a spreadsheet with all the EPIK jobs coming up (just numbers)...it's in English

I have been here 4 years...taught 2 years in Incheon and almost 2 years in rural Korea near Hapcheon...would I go to Japan?...sure...I did on my last vacation... teach there?...if I could find the right job YES

Good Luck
