Open class-please help!
« on: May 24, 2011, 04:58:51 PM »
So I have to do an open class for one of my afterschool classes so the parents can see what their kids are learning. I was thinking of using my 2nd and 3rd grade combined class. I've just been focusing on phonics and teaching them new words and teaching a ton of songs to get them up and moving. There's a lot of pressure from my school for the class to be 'perfect' and I'm kind of at a standstill. My method of teaching phonics is good I think but not up to 'open class' standards.  Just wondering if anyone has any ideas/games/activities/worksheets, anything that could help?! Thanks in advance!! :)

Parents like to see phonics.  Songs are an attention-getter.  I suggest you look in the phonics threads (run a search in thread titles for PHONICS) for worksheets, or look at sites like MES-English.  Playing a game the students like and are familiar with is also probably a good idea.

Project work looks really good in after-school open classes, in my opinion, but your kids are a bit young for anything too complicated.  You might have them assemble picture dictionaries or something with pictures they've drawn or cut out, or something along those lines....
