My friend experienced something like this, except much worse. When she told them she wasn't going to renew, they basically said that if she goes to a school within a certain distance of their school they'd give her a really bad recommendation. She taught in a small town, so she basically had to move somewhere else.

To be honest, from what you said they're doing to you, it doesn't seem so bad. Until it gets much worse, I'd just keep your head down and do the work. I don't know about your experience there, but I'd imagine you want to leave on good terms. I mean really, what else can you do? If you aren't considering quitting, then all you can do is do what they ask and just be happy when you go!

Sorry but you're not going to get much sympathy.  I wish my school would let me leave early or not deskwarm or have extra time off that so many other teachers seem to get.  From the sounds of it, they're just treating as many other schools treat their NETs - it's far from being walked on.

I agree with others, it could be down to how you worded things OP

I actually asked for a transfer last year,  after all the school hierarchy had called me into a meeting and said how they wanted me to stay.  I got offered a larger apartment, better working conditions etc.

But they couldn't offer me what I really wanted, which was extra classes. I explained that I would rather teach during my free hours than deskwarm.  Nobody including me mentioned the obvious fact that extra classes meant extra money.  Everyone took it with good grace and still treated me very well right up to my last day with them.

But it doesn't actually sound that out of order that they've asked you to deskwarm and take tests,  many PS teachers have to do this all the time

Just to clarify - I NEVER once said he was being walked on.  It just sounds like a normal day at work to me tbh.

I am saying however in response to Jack Winston's remark

Why do you think they would hate you for this?

That though they might not hate him they will now treat and perceive him differently as he has caused them a loss of face.  If you don't know that, you really do not know Jack about this country.

As with most apologists, you guys have both failed at intelligence (basic reading comp skills) and do not understand Korea at all.  I always find it is those types that have the lesser understanding than the cynics (though not as bad a lack of understanding as the haters / bashers)

I've even been in groups with Koreans and these Koreaphile waeygook types and have put forth very candid views on Korea only to have the apologists go nuts and argue till their blue in the face and the Koreans will usually act pleased.  Then when it's just me and the Koreans, they'll give me a nod and say 'wow you know Korea culture like a Korean.'  There is a Korea they want you to see and a Korea that is really there.

I neither love nor hate it by the way, same with any other place.

If you think you can or can't do a thing - you are probably right.

Yes, in Korean culture if you ever say "no" to anything it is like dumping your girlfriend for another girl. Why are Koreans all a bunch of whiny ㅘ가시?  ::)

On the one hand, I know there might be some frustrations when it comes to saying "no," but there are some things to keep in mind.  Initially, it's best to realize that we are in their own country and that it's part of their culture to insist.  Secondly, it's more constructive to look at certain obstacles not as a frustration, but as a game to overcome and see what you can do.

Also remember to keep your comments civil on Waygook.  Not only are foreigners reading this, but so are the Koreans.  It's best to not generalize your frustrations to all Koreans.

To The Cow Avatar Guy with the long name,

No my reading comp is just fine, For instance I have a total ability to read the statement and see that theres a complete and total lack of his reason for quitting. I can further deduce that he likely just wanst to move on based on the comment that he knew he wouldnt sign a third when signing the second. So again your face argument is only applicable if he supplies the further informatin I said would be needed for you to have a case.

I know that Koreans lose face, nothing he has said suggests that they are losing face because hes not staying, we dont sign life contracts we sign one year contracts, and theres quite a lot of us that don't sign again for various reasons.

Even if it is within the bounds of the contract, the fact that they've changed their minds about how to treat her does seem to suggest that they wanted you to stay.

On the other hand, none of it really seems unreasonable... and instead of concluding that they're just being hard on you now out of spite, they were probably just taking it easy on you before because they thought it would make you want to stay.

yeah, it's a big hassle for them when they get a new teacher......

just tell them "that's too bad" and that they should "take a rest" and that you wish them a "diligent" new native teacher.
Go not to the [Koreans] for counsel, for they will say [maybe].
