Green Eggs and Ham powerpoint
« Reply #183 on: August 23, 2011, 03:39:15 pm »
Hi,

I remember really liking this book when I was a kid and so I wanted to read it to the kids in my afterschool class. I tried staying as true to the book as possible. There are some pictures that I added that are not in the book but I added them to emphasize the vocabulary (i.e., boat, goat, house, box, fox, train, rain).

If you use the powerpoint, please send me feedback.

Thanks.

Bearenstein Bears Vacation

Easy reader version (old school Bearenstein Bears before getting their own series)
Simple words and rhyming.

About the beach, uses a lot of 'don't'

This is my ppt for The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Ideal for kindergarten/young beginners.

I used the actual book for the lesson, but I used this ppt and activities as a prelude and then to follow.

First I introduced the new words using the ppt, then we read the story.

After the story the ppt leads the students through phonics activities, and then story sequencing.

There is also a craft attached where students must make their own caterpillar, each body part is a day of the week and they must glue in the right food that the caterpillar ate that day.

Hi~ i also did a very simple, white background post on the hungry caterpillar so that the kids can practise writing the story on  the minibooklet i made for them to keep after coloring in the pictures. this is to improve writing skills and they can have the story at home..

Shared Reading Class
« Reply #189 on: October 06, 2011, 02:10:37 pm »
At my school I run extra classes each week where I read an English storybook and plan some activities to go along. So far I've read "Where the Wild Things Are" and "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs". I will attach some of  my PPT's that I use to explain the content of the books. Was wondering if anyone else is doing the same thing and if there are any good book suggestions that would use easy enough language but not be too repetitive or boring for grades 3-4.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie storybook that I scanned.

Target language:
"If...then" statements
Wants
Contractions

I changed the words a bit to fit with the lesson, but I left the scans in tact, so you can change it as you wish.

Also attached a worksheet for the higher level kids to fill out while reading.

This is awesome. My co-teacher often does not like using the stories in the books because they don't relate to the immediate lesson. Makes sense. I made up my own story before discovering this treasure trove. I hope to post a nice story in the future to contribute!

Elementary School Roleplays (Fables, story books) great for after-school or camp
« Reply #194 on: December 07, 2011, 01:24:06 pm »
Here are a couple roleplays based on children's story books that have worked for me.

Feel free to add your adaptations.

The Hansel and Gretel PPT was done by a K-teacher on this board and is loosely comparable to the script.

In the City Mouse & Country Mouse activity at the end, base the example on comparisons between any 2 contrasting cities.

For a camp situation, have the students actually memorize their lines, design backdrops on large sheets of paper and create their own costumes.

'Mystery' Books- Elementary level

I used these for my 'detective' winter camp. The reading level is pretty low. However, the colution to the crime is pretty difficult. Tell your students to think outside of the box and look closely at the pictures!

BTW my students really enjoyed both books. Both were done using pictures from Conan.

I made this for Winter Camp. It goes with the British Council animation here: http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/en/short-stories/why-anansi-has-thin-legs. Worksheet and roleplay dialog included. You're welcome.
