CNN: Seoul is the greatest city in the world!
« on: May 30, 2011, 11:52:39 am »
At least according to this article:

http://www.cnngo.com/seoul/life/50-reasons-why-seoul-worlds-greatest-city-534720?page=0,0

50 reasons why, you may agree or disagree, but it's a fairly quick and entertaining read.

Nice article, and it does a good job at neatly summing up some of the stuff I love about the city: It'd be a good one to bookmark to show friends or family who come to visit, give them some ideas of stuff to do in the capital whilst you work M-F.

Don't read too much into the title though, its 50% an advertorial piece and CNN Go says roughly the same about its other "city" pages. ;)

16. The Kimchi Miracle.  IT helped with the fight against SARS, prevents bird flu and Newcastle disease.

Nice read.

I don't think I would ever have fallen in love with Seoul as a tourist, but it has some really cool areas, and I am constantly impressed with the convenience of the public transit and how late everything is open.

Yes, I must agree, convenient, I love the public transport system, but in all fairness to other cities, I don't think this is the best city for tourists in the world. This is not an insult in any way, just being realistic.

Number 1 reason: the author is Korean.

Seoul is a nice enough city, but it's surely not my favorite city in the world. Most of those "reasons" are pretty stupid.

I find it strange that the person said this is the favourite destination for Asians since most S E Asians find it almost impossible to get a tourist visa to visit here.

I have to agree. I have yet to 'fall in love' with Seoul, yet, though it is a nice enough place to live. If I was a mere tourist to the city, though, I must admit I would not have been very impressed and I would have quickly forgotten it.

I do want to explore most of its crannies though and eventually fall in love with it.

Why wasn't the air quality or The Anti-English Spectrum on the list? These are 2 of the most livable attributes of Seoul.

Reason 45 - Sleeping is for losers

Sure, lots of places are open late, but until the subway (which really is excellent) starts running 24/7, a la NYC, one can't really make an argument for Seoul.  Just my opinion.  I do like Seoul, though.

I live about an hour south of Seoul.

1.  Most of the things about Seoul being the best, really apply to Korea as a whole.

2. I've always thought if I were to live in Korea longer I'd choose Busan over Seoul.  Two very different cities, but I've enjoyed my time in Busan much more as a whole than Seoul.  Obviously Seoul is a great city though.

It's a fantastic city to live in (or near in my case), but yeah, it doesn't really offer much for tourists at all.
