35k, and yes and yes. Or you can make friends with someone who has one and they can take you. Where are you located?

35 000won/year ... just go in to a store, fill out the paperwork, provide your ARC & the cash, they'll take a headshot, and issue your card. Personally I don't think mine was worth the effort though.

www.ezshopkorea.com & www.nicedeli.com stock Costco products - quite a markup on products though

Hey when I got mine it was 35,000.  A few of us clubbed together and we share the card.  Theres a picture of the person that owns the card on the back but never once has anyone in our costco ever checked the picture.  Totally worth it I love costco and where else would I buy cheese otherwise.

Yes, you can sign up or renew your Costco membership in Korea.  From what I remember, it cost me 35,000won vs. in America it costs $50.  It's definitely worth it!

From what I understand, no matter where you buy a Costco membership, it can be used at any Costco in the world.  So that's a pretty good deal.  I bought mine in the USA a few weeks before leaving, and I had no trouble at all getting into a Costco (in Youngdeungpo-gu Office, Seoul) with my card.  From the sound of it, the membership fees are cheaper here.  I think it was $50 USD for a regular membership and about $100 USD for an executive/gold membership, so these fees in Korea look lots more appealing.

It's good if you live nearby, once or twice a month and you're set. Although I suggest you go on weekdays; the weekends are a hell mess of trolleys, screaming kids, ajummas cutting in front of you and a chopped onion relish madhouse in the foodcourt. ???

Personally I think it's worth it, if you are nearby a Costco.

If you sign up with a friend you can get 2 cards at the same time.  I suggest you pretend you are living in the same place as they allow two cards per house hold, that way you can share the yearly cost between 2 people.

And when you go home or travel to other places that also have costco, you can use the same card.

It's totally worth it if a few of these things are true:
you live near a costco
you want to cook non-korean food
you have a fair sized freezer
you like cheese (or american cuts of meat, or candy...)
you don't mind eating the same thing for weeks, and want to save money

I know I would be way more miserable in Korea without my membership.

Oh, also: like others have said, you can use your Korean membership at costco stores in other countries.  I've done it.  However, you're supposed to tell them at the cash that your membership is from another country.  If the cashier is having a bad day and doesn't notice by themselves, there can apparently be problems.  No idea what problems exactly, it's just what I was told when I used mine.

completely agree. Went on a weekday last week and it was soooo much better. Worth it if you have a big freezer. Stay away from stuff that can go stale or rotten after a week or two (unless you're splitting it with friends) and just buy in bulk things that can last. A once a month trip to Costco feeds me and my gf for the whole month (dinners). And of course. Real cheddar cheese. So far only place I've found to sell it (even though its way more expensive).

Anyang -> CostCo : Worth it?
« Reply #11 on: June 14, 2011, 06:32:18 PM »
I'm considering getting a CostCo membership. I'm currently living in Anyang, and I guess the closest CostCo is the one in Yangjae.

Is CostCo worth the time it takes to get from Anyang to Yangjae (about an hour)? Can dairy products spoil by the time I return home from CostCo?

milk cant spoil that fast, unless its extreme heat. dairy products would be the same. however id think about whether or not to transport them during this time of year. winter is fine, but yeah lol it is worth it if you like to buy in bulk, it saves money, but actually i just shop at emart, homeplus and little mom and pop stores for the best deals.

good luck

I'd say it's not worth it if you live an hour away.  If you buy in bulk, are you going to carry it all the way back home?  Also, do you really save that much more money if you have to pay for bus rides or taxi rides to and fro?  I think to make the math work, you'd have to buy in huge bulk and that's not really feasible without a car, but then an two hour round trip by car would probably cost you a pretty penny at the pump.  It'd probably be cheaper going to the local HomePlus or Emart, or look for real supermarkets that are fairly cheap as well such as Nong Hyup Mart.

Why would you possibly need that much dairy? It's probably cheaper at the lotte or E-mart around the corner. Costco comes in handy of course, but such try to limit the dairy and you'll be fine! You should however get the large block of cheese they sell for $10.00 it is marvelous and cheese will last better than yogurt or milk. I'd just be careful because summer is right around the corner and it becomes dreadful.

I live an hour and a half away from my nearest costco. I go at least once a month. I buy meat, dairy products etc and they don't spoil on the way home. Must add that I bought a nice cooler bag with wheels from costco to put it in. Keeps it cool all the way home! Trip to costco is ALWAYS worth it!

I live in Suwon and never have problems with food spoiling.  I don't get the milk, however.  Costco is great because they have a lot of items you simply can't buy at Homeplus and the like.  And as others have said...the cheese is worth it alone!

Hi...

I live in Anyang as well and I take the bus there, it takes 40 minutes instead of 1 hour. You can take buses :
3030
9504
917

I think somethings are worth it. For example the cheese last a long time and they have a reasonable price. I usually buy cheedar, mozarella and fetta. Also lemons are much cheaper in costo 7,000 for a bad with about 8 lemons also last a while. I also buy cereals and granola bard there sometimes, and trailmixes and things like that. Also sometimes I buy chicken and freeze it and it last a while, but the prices chaneg on that.

Hope this helps :)
