High School - Zombies!
« on: May 25, 2010, 10:38:20 am »
I used this with a group of 11 students in an after school, English Conversation class.

I split the students into pairs and gave them a question they would have to answer for a clip we would watch (Who is in the scene, what are they doing, etc).  One partner would watch the soundless clip and describe it, while the other wrote down the answers for their question.  The scene with the queen song from Shaun of the Dead worked pretty.  They realized it was supposed to be more funny than scary afterwards and was not as violent as most other parts I could remember.

After getting them thinking about the topic, they had to imagine that their area had a zombie problem.  I showed and explained the zombie plan I had prepared with silly drawn pictures.  Each group had to answer the following questions and draw pictures on a large sheet of paper.

1) Where will you go?
2) What will you take with you? (30 things only.  I prepared a short list of camping items to help them think)
3) How will you fight?
4) Who will you save? (Three people only)

Not very appropriate to be used as a regular lesson, but their answers were very creative and funny.  Most of the them didn't stick to the limit on question 4, but it wasn't a big problem.

Can you be more specific about the scene you used? Did you have the DVD or was there a link to the vid you could post here?
Sounds like a great idea for a lesson, just having a hard time visualizing how it plays out without seeing the video clip. :)

I was able to borrow the DVD, but the scene I used was this one.  The movie is not entirely necessary, since asking students to list favorite scary movies
or zombie facts may be enough to start.  An alternative you can try using is searching on youtube for "Zombies in Plain English".
This video is more informative, but the speaker talks rather fast.

I didn't want to do a typical Halloween lesson, so I did one on Zombies! This lesson was geared toward Halloween but only the first two slides or so slides (which have my pictures on them so you probably want to edit them out... or not, that's cool too) so this lesson really can be done whenever.

Objective: violent word vocabulary, fun lesson
Materials: Zombie powerpoint, speed read
Hook: Powerpoint with pictures of self

Vocabulary for Lesson:
NOUNS: Pencil, Plastic Bag, Golf Club, Chopsticks, Soap, Umbrella, KPOP, Bug Spray, Bed sheets, Kitchen Knife, Dirty Socks, Mop, High Heels, Shower Curtain, Kimchi, Pot;
VERBS: Stab, decapitate, strangle, blind, distract, club

Lesson (25 minutes): I started by briefly introducing Halloween. Then introduced the idea of zombies (they all know what zombies are). Used the powerpoint and went over the “zombie checklist” (i.e. how can you tell if someone is or is not a zombie) and checked by using people in my class (is 지은 a zombie? Is she decaying?).
Then I did the speed read that is attached, which is tailored to my class so if you just change the names you should be able to use it. A speed read is when you give the students sheets of paper that have two sentences on them, one sentence begins with “when you hear” and one sentence begins with “you say.” This speed read has 30 slips of paper because that’s the number of students in my class but you can add or subtract sentences to make it fit. So in a speed read there are maybe 30 or so slips of paper and together all the sheets create a story however the order is all mixed up! The only way that you can tell the story is to listen for the sentence before yours (i.e. “when you hear). The idea behind the speed read is to practice listening comprehension and speaking speed – because you have to say the story as fast as possible! My students were able to do it in 59 seconds, which is crazy. What I did was had them read it through once, then we talked our way through the story to check comprehension, then I told them I was timing them and whichever class did it the fastest got stickers (they freaked out).
Guided Practice (25 minutes): After that I told them that in order to prevent such a scenario we would be learning how to protect against a zombie invasion using everyday objects. Cued up the powerpoint again and went through my verbs (Stab, Blind, Distract, etc) and my nouns (Pencil, Plastic Bag, Golf Club etc), using the form “you can ________ a zombie with a __________” (i.e. “you can STAB a zombie with a KNIFE” – a little gruesome I know, but kept their attention the entire time). Then I had them play bingo where on a scrap piece of paper they created a 4 X 4 bingo sheet and filled in the blanks with the nouns. However in order to get “Bingo” they had to stand up, say “BRAAAAIIIIINNNNNNSSSS” and use the form I taught them for each of the words (I can BLIND a zombie with KIMCHI).
In the remaining 3 or so minutes I gave them all candy (Halloween) and had them do the speed read one more time.

Attached are the powerpoint and the speed read (2 versions: the whole story as one unit and the premade “when you hear” “you say” version that all you have to do is cut into strips.  Enjoy!

Wow, I love what you've done!!! I just did a zombie survival lesson as well. We also talked about zombie walks in American culture. I used some photos of myself all "zombied" out and I showed them a video from the Plattsburgh Zombie Walk 2009 (where I came from) There are MUCH better videos out there of other zombie walks though so I suggest using another.
I had some help from this thread: http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,1349.0.html

Anyways, here are my contributions!!!

I LOVE THE SPEED READ strategy, Im going to definitely use that soon.

Here is the Zombie Game that I made that is similar to Leticia's.
I added "Fate cards" that add a little bit of excitement to the game. Basically after the students finish their worksheets, I check their work and give them a card based on their answers or just randomly. The students that survive, get chocolate.

I added the cards just because the students were giving similar and boring answers. So I started "killing them off" for lack of creativity. It worked like a charm!

I'm really happy that my lesson's proving useful!  I also loved the other lessons posted (and honestly - can you really ever be over-prepared for a zombie attack?) so I might end up using them later on.

As for the speed read my kids completed it in 59 seconds! That's less than 2 seconds on average per sentence, which is just mind-boggling.

So - bingo rules.
First, and this is probably most important, when I introduced the unconventional weapons vocabulary I always said it using this particular form "I can _____ a zombie with a _______" so examples are "I can STAB a zombie with an UMBRELLA" "I can BLIND a zombie with DIRTY SOCKS" etc.

I don't like making massive amounts of hand-outs so I had my students make their own bingo cards (this only works if the students actually bring their notecards to class though). If you don't want to/can't do this just print out a 4 x 4 graph. I then explained that we were playing bingo, explained the rules of bingo (most kids should know them), showed the second to last slide on the powerpoint and had the students in their notebooks make a 4 X 4 chart. Then I showed the last slide on the powerpoint (the one with all of the words on it) and had the students fandomly fill in their 4 X 4 chart. Depending on how many rounds you're going to play you can either just have students mark with a pencil or pen when the item is called or you can give them scrap paper and have them rip it up and make chips (or if you don't trust your students to rip paper without totally making a mess of the classroom you can provide chips). Then I would call out any of the 16 items randomly. When a kid got bingo he had to shout BRAIIIINNNNSSS and stand up, and then tell me how he could use all of the items as a weapon. So for example if his Bingo was "KPOP" "golf clubs" ""umbrella" and "soap" he would have to use the "I can _____ a zombie with a _______" for all four items in order to win at bingo. Thereason I did this was I wanted to add some critical content - instead of just listening and reading they're forced to speak, use the verb vocabulary, and also to use their reasoning skills.

Hope this helps! If you have any more questions let me know :).

Thanx epotosky, this sounds really great, can't wait to try it next week, does anyone have an idea how to make zombie masks other than painted cardboard?

The speed read was a great hit with my classes! I had some trouble explaining how it works but once they got it they loved it.  I've never seen my whole class work together as a team like that before! Thank-you so much!!
