Can someone merge this thread with the new one "How many cats" please?  Either way, I just started that lesson today with my third graders so here's some things I made for it.... one is just a simple hidden game...I've used this template many times(from eslgamesworld) the next is a review and missing game...the review has 10 animals....(This ppt was originally counting flashcards) I used a zebra instead of a horse (idk why) but do enjoy.

Here's a thread for "How Many Cats?"  If there isn't enough material here for your use, please consult the "How Many Cows?" thread for last year's book. 


Here's a simple review powerpoint practicing the phrases "He has __ _____s" and "She has __ _____s."


My students' favorite game for this lesson was just me saying "make groups of ____," and then the students grabbing their fellow classmates to make appropriately-sized groups.  If you do a little mental math and don't have a prime number of students, you can keep all or most of them in the game for a few turns.  My favorite part was the last couple of students shrieking and jumping apart when I said "make groups of one."

I just put this ppt together for period 2 practice before the dice game.  Basically the student will ask you, "How many _____?" and you will count the animals.  OR if you want, you can ask them and they can answer, or a mix of both.

I included mice in the PPT (not learned in the textbook) because we learned the words mouse and mice in the last lesson from country mouse and city mouse. 

Animals included:  dogs, cats, cows, mice, pigs.

Well this chapter basically focuses on numbers and animals.  I decided to focus more on the counting aspect in the lesson.  Students who are particularly good at math or pattern recognition may enjoy the game more.  Of course, everyone is free to come up with their own patterns to challenge the students in counting and add onto the PowerPoint.  But basically, you can make it a race to see who can find out the answer the fastest.  Just make sure that if the student raises their hand, they are ready to answer right away.  Otherwise, just ignore them and pick a different student who is actually ready.

This is a PPT and handout I used for the 2nd lesson of this period. The first part of the PPT is a review of the chapter's vocab & expressions. The next section of the PPT includes the handout, the teacher will display the PPT slide and the students will have to write the # of animals on their paper. After that there is a True or False (X or O) section for them to work on. At the end of the PPT is a section for a bingo game. Have the students flip their handout over and draw a 3x3 grid, the words are the next slides.

I just want to state that I used some of the original photos and the format from another poster in this section. Thanks for your post, it worked well with my studnts, I hope you don't mind me tweaking it for another period.

I made this game for my 3rd graders and seemed to go down pretty well. We have a plastic hammer in the classroom but maybe a fly swatter or something like that would work too. Rules:
one person from each team (4/5 people per team) was the hitter. The others shouted out what they saw on the grid and the hitter has to hit it!
I played it where each team takes it in turns to use the hammer and gets 40 seconds or so to call out as many things as possible i.e. " four cows" "two pigs" "one pig and two cows" etc. I gave them one point for every time they hit the correct square on the grid (there is more than one of some things). Each round gets a little bit harder but not very hard (most of my students are pretty low level). (My co-teacher came up with the concept so I knew they'd be no problem with hitting our whiteboard with a rubber hammer).

Here is a guess the number game I made. The students must guess the number of animals in the hidden picture. When the right team guesses, the picture will be revealed and they will have to say how many animals there are.

ex. Five dogs. Six pigs. etc. etc.

I only used the animals that were covered in the first lesson of this chapter.

I've also attached the PPT I will be using to introduce the lesson to the students. I use a PPT like this to start every new chapter. It gives the students to practice and understand the dialogues from the CD before they hear them. I usually rely heavily on my CT for translations during this part. Everything is usually smooth sailing after this part though.

NOTE: This is a very bare bones introduction. It just tells them what the new topics are and has one sample dialogue.

This is a cool "How many...?" board game w/ animals  (When my Ss played I modified the dice w some paper and tape do 4,5,6 read 1,2,3 also.  Lasts longer that way.)

There is a speed quiz which I used last year, and it was made by someone, I'm afraid I don't know, long time ago. My students loved it.

One of my students actually told me about this when I showed a more traditional version of the song. The other students liked it a lot. There are four wrapped fish though and a couple other anachronisms.
