If you have spotty attendance, will they report you to your school?  Mine is a huge time commitment (3x/wk for 2 hours after work), and I feel like we're not learning nearly as much as we should since English is pretty much outlawed in our classroom.  Fridays after work are especially awful...anyway, does anyone have experience with these classes and info regarding expectations related to attendance?

i took free classes with daegu moe.  they didnt test for ability so the highest level class was full of poeple who would constantly ask questions in English.  anyways, i didnt like it, so i quit.  nobody at my school complained.  they just sent a piece of paperwork to the moe and that was it.  it was painless.

Are you required by your school to take these classes? I'm not sure where you're from, but they might have a "language cafe" around there... You're able to set your own schedule and interact one-on-one with a local (who usually has decent English skills), and it doesn't cost anything. Just a possibility.

In Gwangju there's no commitment and no one cares if you quit but you're barred from future courses if you do so.

I heard of this but never knew how to access it. Does anyone happen to know if the classes exist in Pohang?

I don't think the classes are offered all year long, only during the the peak intakes; but I'm not sure. Your co-teacher is probably the go-to person for this. The MOE should be sending out emails about it to notify your teacher.

I went to a couple classes, but they were a bit too basic for me, and kind of dragged out. So I stopped going because personally, I was learning more using language books. The level of teaching will depend on the group's level. I think whether or not the course will be helpful really depends on how much you already know and how you learn.

I doubt you'll get in trouble for missing class. It's your free time.

I wish my local MOE would offer Korean classes! There are only 5 teachers in my town though, and we can't exactly travel 3 times a week to the nearest city - 45mins away, and be back by the last bus for the classes that are available.

I've been trying for 2 years to study Korean alone, but I can only get so far. I'm losing my drive at present because every time we start making plans to study Korean together, something happens and we never do. Its depressing.

Ulsan has a free Korean class offered by the MOE.

We even get a free book too! Level 1 and 2 has come around so far, but there will be more levels to come as long as there is interest... i think.

They take attendance but its not crucial.

2 hour classes/ 1 day a week.

Daejeon has 2 levels (beginner and intermediate)

Beginner is run 2 days a week for 2 hours each class and then intermediate is 2 separate classes and 1 day a week for 2 hours.

I was in intermediate and went to the first class and got bored so stopped going.  This is the 6th week of the class though so I'm hoping to go either this week or next week to see if I can finally learn something new.

I took classes last winter with the Busan MOE. They were 2 nights a week for 2.5 hours each, I think...

The teachers were VERY nice, however, because it was totally focused on grammar, I didn't get much out of them since I studied Korean at Uni.

I think they would be a lot better if there was a LOT more speaking and vocabulary. But since they are free and the book is less than 20k, it seems like a good deal! I'd consider going if they had my level this term, but they didn't at night.

Where are these classes. I signed up for the Saturday classes and when I went to the location that they told me there was nobody there. They told me it was at the Buk-gu Social Welfare Center or something like that.

Are you taking the Saturday classes?

I took the ones offered before but even at the advanced level they were using a basic Korean book. I would finish 5 chapters a class before I got bored. It was good to be in a learning environment but it wore thin after learning to count... again.

Daejeon offered a beginner and intermediate course.  I signed up for the intermediate course.  In the beginning we were given a truly intermediate level test.  Unfortunately, most of the students were actually beginner level.  So the intermediate class became a beginner class.  It moved at a reeeeeeally slow pace, and I quit after two weeks.  Plus, it was only one day a week, which isn't really that helpful.  The teacher had big focus problems as well.  Probably a new teacher.  In one hour of class we talked about adverbs for 15 minutes, homosexuals for 25, and a Korean idiom that wasn't really useful for 20.

At least in Daejeon, MOE classes are good for beginners, but anything outside of that you need to find on your own.

I don't know if anything has ever come of my dropping the class, as it only happened a few weeks ago.  Nothing probably will.

I am trying to locate more information about these classes and how I can sign up.  I know this post is a little old but hopefully someone might know.  I just checked the MOE website and I couldn't find anything, but perhaps I was looking in the wrong spot.  Any guidance?
