Grade 3 Lesson 12 - How Many Flowers (Buzz and Bibi)
« on: June 07, 2011, 02:11:04 pm »
This is my first go at making a ppt for a game so it's pretty rough and very simple but I hope someone can use it! I used known vocab from this and previous lessons.

I put kids into groups of four and gave each team a whiteboard and marker. As I removed the sqaures they could guess the item and how many there were e.g. four flowers, ten dogs. They had to write their answer on the board and the leader raised their hand. First team to raise a hand (with the correct answer) got 2 points, any other team with a correct answer after that got 1 point. Team with the most points at the end wins.

I used the previous ppt's pictures and two other powerpoints to make a very simple trash ball game for my third graders. It took about ten minutes (6 teams, 2 rounds).

Simple minesweeper game (modified from a template found here, thanks).

Uses words from the textbook exclusively along with numbers 2-6.

Sentence pattern:  There are __2__ __flowers____.

Grade 3 L12 How many flowers? (Buzz, Bomi) Bingo sheets and ppt
« Reply #3 on: September 26, 2011, 01:53:29 pm »
This is a zip file.

It contains 10 different bingo sheets with space at the bottom of each image.  I plan to write dashes for each letter of the noun under each image -- on game day, I'll start by having students practice writing the alphabet by tracing over the dashes to write the words.  (I am very limited in what I can have these students do due to the CT - we teach to the lowest student.)

On game day, I will pick 1 student at random to answer each slide - then expose the slide as the students locate and mark the corresponding image.

Bingos can be made up-down and left-right.

It will take 3 bingos to get a reward.

Props to Kyle for making a sweet template.  This is the pokemon game with built in scoreboard feature (by Daejon) modified for this lesson.  It also has a couple review questions tossed in.  Enjoy!

Here are some materials... I plan on showing this: http://youtu.be/Z_tWEayqHKk Its a Ten Little Indians song, with lyrics and everything. Also, here is a Connect Four game (I have a Smart TV, so am able to draw on the screen the places the children pick). I play connect four usually boys vs girls, or one half of the class against the other. (I also attached a Halloween Connect Four; maybe a little late, but oh well. )

I used the story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  We listened to the story first:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srk8aAaTFXE

Then, we went over the story together again.  I gave each student 1 or 2 pieces of food. (The print-outs can be found here: http://www.kizclub.com/stories4.htm) and when it was their food being eaten, they would come up and put it on the board.  After each day the caterpillar ate, I would ask them different questions: "How much food did the caterpillar eat today" How much food has the caterpillar eaten after 2 days? 3 days?" At the end of the story, I would ask, "How much did the caterpillar eat altogether"  This helps them start practicing counting over 10.  I also prepared a worksheet for writing practice (They have to fill in the blanks with the word and number).  Hopefully this makes sense and someone can use it.
