High School - Postcards

I'm just starting to use this lesson this week (June,2010) so in a little while I'll add any comments from teaching the lesson.

It's pretty basic, some phrases and vocab for writing a postcard, tips on what topics to cover, and ont he black board I'll doa  brainstorm with the students on words to use food good experiences vs bad experiences. I emphasize the use od adjectives and longer sentences in my classes so I'll encourage them to think of good phrases and vocab to achieve length in their answers.

The presentation includes pictures and information on what to see/do in some of the top travel destinations around the world, so the students can use that as ideas for their post cards. In class we will write one postive experience card, and for homework one negative experience. I will give the post card template out as the handout, to practice writing their message and address.

Hello,
This is the powerpoint for my Postcards lesson.  As an additional listening exercise I do this activity.
Before they read my postcard I tell them they will be doing a listening exercise.
One student from each group must come out into the hallway.
I will tell them the first sentence.
They run back and tell their classmates, who write it down.
They come back for the next sentence.
They can remember the whole sentence or just part at a time.
The group who finishes first wins.
My co-teacher monitors their progress.
Then we go over the different parts of the postcard.
Then they make their own.

This lesson has been a continuous favorite amongst my students but it takes a lot of work to do. I was lucky to have had 6 willing friends agree to write back to my students. I basically assigned each group to one of my friends and their job was to write a postcard offering information about Korea. The power point slide pretty much details what I did so I'm not going to go into detail here. The best part was seeing the faces of my students once they received a reply in the mail. Definitely was a fun activity.
