I don't think this topic is started, and I'm preparing for my open class. If I've simply missed a posted topic, do feel free to merge/alert me.
I've become a big fan of this "Missing Dialogue" game, as a way to excite the students about the key sentences. (Plus, with the government's big thing on memorizing the dialogue this year, it'll look really good. ^*) I've attached my simple powerpoint here.
Also for my open class, I'm going to play a game called Sparkle.
For those of you not familiar with Sparkle, it's a type of spelling game. My students LOVE. THIS. GAME. I kid you not. (My 5th grade teacher played it with my class when I was young.) How to play: Have the students stand up. The teacher says the word. The first student repeats the word. Each student after spells the word, until it is completed. The student after repeats the word. The next student says "sparkle." The student after him/her "dies" [sits down}. (My students, probably like your own, really get a kick out of saying "die!" as the players sit down.) Play continues from the next student, going in a round robin, until only one player remains.
For example:
Teacher: Cat
Student 1: Cat
Student 2: C
Student 3: A
Student 4: T
Student 5: Cat
Student 6: Sparkle
Student 7 sits down.
The first time we played, we had to explain it well and practice a couple times, as the game was a new concept. And, to make it more fun, we played by teams, so more students would get out faster. (I recommend this for younger students, as they REALLY like the fast-pace nature of the game, and they can be more interactive quicker.) But once understood (and we let them use their worksheets, so they don't blank out), the game moves very quickly and is REALLY exciting for them.
As a Optional Take, you can change the spelling game to a sentence game - students should speak the sentence in order. Instead of spelling "Cat," for example, they should speak the sentence in order, maybe... "I can jump." - It's a little more challenging, but is played the same way, and the kids seem to enjoy it just as much.
I'll be using this for the Review portion of my lesson, before jumping into Lesson 7 proper. I really recommend this game, if you haven't tried it, it's remarkable how effective it is!
