Do you bring in your own laptop and watch movies?
« on: June 14, 2011, 03:32:27 PM »
Just wondering if it's in poor form to bring in my own laptop and watch movies on it.  I know we're supposed to pretend like we spend every second at school lesson planning, but let's get real...the only people that do that are straight up crazy.  I would just burn all my movies to a DVD, but it takes forever on my laptop.  What do you guys think?

I use my external hard drive and just hook it up to my computer if i want to watch any movies. But if i wanted to i could probably bring my laptop to school because I don't think they would care. But I think it just depends on your school.

I bring in my laptop a few days a week.  The school is very aware that I don't have any planning left to do.  My contract ends in September and I have already planned my summer camp as well as class through the end of Summer.

I just bring my usb and watch my movies/shows/whatever on the school computer. I'm not sure about your situation but my school requires me to deskwarm most of my day and it's niave to assume that I'll be using ALL that time to lesson plan when I'm already done planning for the rest of the year.

i've brought my laptop and watched movies before, but it was only on a day where the students had exams.

that being said, "black swan" was a bad choice of movie to watch at school. don't get me wrong, i loved the movie, but it was CREEPY to have running on my sceeen.  ;D

I find it's a little less obvious to watch shows online.

I watch Korean dramas and movies at mysoju.com
Frontline episodes at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/view/
Dateline:  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032600/

Thanks for the links.  I am no longer concerned with being obvious.  I find that pretending to work is too much effort.  There is nothing wrong with being efficient with lesson planning and then using your remaining time as you see fit.  Ideally, I would not spend 3 hours a day desk-warming, but it is what it is.

So many people complain about people who complain about desk-warming.  In my case, it is not just the 3 wasted hours every day that are the problem.  It is that using that time for something productive is all but impossible with students running down the halls and yelling, a piano class next door, and a playground full of yelling outside of the window.  A movie with headphones barely blocks the noise.

Wow, that's a lot of noise to block out.

I don't know where you're located, but the public library by my school has tons of amazing DVDs that I sometimes bring in and watch right on my desktop.  (I always have a PPT or something minimized to bring up right away if some suit wanders in.)

Since having your laptop with you isn't a problem, then it could just be a way to supplement your viewing with new and different videos...

In my school - I know it would be a huge problem if I brought in my laptop and started watching movies.  I think they would see it as, as I stated prior, as too obvious a display of me having extra time that they would feel compelled to fill...

I had downloaded a few good movies for my students to watch on days after exams. How do I play the movie with Korean subtitles? Thanks

Be discrete. Minimize the window on the screen as you watch. Don't just kick back and watch the movie full screen.

Depends on the school. I've kicked back in my office with teachers (including the head teacher), pushed up a couch, dimmed the lights, and ate snacks during vacations. Others can't do anything like this. I think most schools won't mind if you simply sit at your desk and watch a movie on your computer, though.

I did last year because I had my own room, but no computer.  I totally watched shows and movies during downtime.  No one ever cared.

I just use my usb if I am so inclined, but I've been on a Kindle kick.

I've watched tv shows at work, full screen too! I'm also very efficient at lesson planning (though I only plan for the next lesson, because knowing my co-teacher, it would probably change), and I honestly have nothing to do. Ok yes, I do have summer campstuff I could have done, but I'm more than prepared for this first week of it (and I'm planning on working on the rest of it at home).

I guess it depends on the school.  Last winter I brought in my Wii and had a blast playing with the other teachers.  We also have a ping pong table and usually get some games going everyday.
My VP really doesn't care what we as long as we're there in case the officials from the education office stop by.

I'm never expected to work. I just have to show up for whatever reason, as do the two contract English teachers.

My school's really small (21 total), thus there's a lot of down time. Luckily, the teaching staff is really relaxed, so I bring my USB and watch a movie/episode. I have to watch them in the library though, since all the other classes with computers are occupied.
