Busy server?
« on: June 14, 2011, 02:35:24 pm »
Seems like at certain times it's nearly impossible to login to waygook.org.  Any plans on getting this fixed?  Or tips on being able to login?

Arsalan is always working to improve the site, and he's footing all the bills so any donation helps!

Otherwise, the best ways to keep the site up and running smoothly -

1. Try to log on during non-peak hours like in the afternoon or evening
2. I hate to say it, but don't post crap. The boom in users is great, but unfortunately we now have a lot more useless threads, too.
3. Use the search function, duplicate posts = longer loading time

I just optimized the database engine for read performance.  We'll see how that pans out :)  Let me know.  I had to balance it before, but I'll need to look at the server logs tomorrow too see how it did under a peak hour load.

It also helps to use the search function before posting a question. At the moment the search function can take a while so one way around the delay is to Google the search instead; i.e. "waygook.org (search)" (where (search) = the search term).

EDIT: You can also use http://searcheslcafe.com/

What are people posting that's so bad?

Nothing bad, just bored people looking for conversation I think. Topics like, "How much coffee do you drink?" or "What have you learned from teaching?" With 1 or 2 of these topics popping up a day, and several pages of responses, they definitely slow the site. They're not bad, but in the long run, they aren't useful resources that teachers 2 years from now will search for.

Even the best of us get sucked in sometimes... 8)

I still had problems logging in. :(

Maybe it's got something to do with the fact that peopel can stay logged in forever? Or a month at a time?

For loggins, you can select "forever" in the login area, or if you choose a similar option with the links at the top of the page, it will work.

The issue may be with your browser.  I think it's automatically cleaning your browser cache, including cookies.  :)

*** EDIT:  Sorry, I should be a little more acurate.  I think your browser is clearing out the cache when you exit, or restart.

I've noticed that when you type the wrong password you get a server non-responsive error instead of a 'wrong password' message. So, though it sounds dumb, make sure you have the right password.

Hi,

I have 2 suggestions for helping to reduce redundant posts, but I'm not sure how feasible they are or if you've already thought of them.

1) Make the search function more prominent on the site and change the search term parameters(?). Sometimes it takes a little finagling of the wording to get the results wanted, and sometimes the top results don't even have the key phrases in them. If the search function were more obvious and worked better, perhaps more people would take the time to use it.

2) You know how we get that helpful little warning before posting a reply that tells us a reply has been made since we started writing? Can we get something like that for New Topics? For example, if someone puts a title on their topic similar to one or two threads already in existence, perhaps a little note could pop-up before they post it suggesting similar threads already exist (links provided), and to please check them before posting.
It's kind of ridiculous that we'd need something like that, since it's just common sense to search first, but people are lazy ;)

Anyway, I'm sorry if these suggestions aren't technically feasible. I'm really a grandma at techy things.  Thank you for all your hard work!

I think you're right about the browser.  My work browser must clear it.  I have NO idea how to change it.  My laptop at home as me logged in still, after a day.

Perhaps somewhat off topic, but I hate this. It could possibly add to loading time since it forces me to stay logged in longer and load more. I'll often type something, and click post, and since it takes forever to load sometimes, someone will post something in the meantime, so I hit reply again, and after another minute or so of loading, the same response will come up. I think the most that's happened to me was four times in a row. Sometimes, I can be like, "Oh, someone said what I was going to say." but most of the time, it just delays posting. Also, I feel like most people don't even pay attention to it or previous posts, since there are so many threads of people just saying the same things over and over.

Edit:  Hm, part the of quote was supposed to be bolded. I hate the warning message.

I was always using Internet Explorer and had all kinds of problems with Waygook: logging in, getting in and being unable to open a page, getting that Error 404 message etc etc.

Then I downloaded Google Chrome and now use that and there has been no problems at all. It is a little slow  but I have always been able to log in and look around without any hassles.
Lord Buddha please help me, for I am not smart enough to make it dumb enough for them to understand.

Ok fair enough, I changed the default value for this very everyone.  However, if it's not working for you, it can be switched by going to:

Profile>Look and Layout>Don't warn on new replies made while posting....

I agree, and I just got my head bit off on a different thread for pointing this very thing out. There are so many people asking the same questions and giving the same answers, it's clogging up the traffic.
BUT...
Arsalan: Whatever you did...MUCH better because I haven't rcvd a time out msg in a couple days. Awesome. Thank you!

I haven't had a problem in viewing posts, but I've had a lot of problems editing posts or posting new ones. I keep getting errors about timing out and saying the message was blank.
