I've signed the intent to renew, but I'm not completely happy with my contract and I think it would be best to just move to another area.  Is it possible to change your mind if you have signed the intent to renew but not another contract?

Thanks for your help!

I think your school might be a little annoyed, especially if they asked you to stay...
But,the intent to sign isnt binding...
the contract,once you've signed it,is.

Make sure you notify them as soon as possible,so they'll be prepared to find another teacher.

Best of luck

I agree. The intent to renew is not binding and you are still allowed to change your mind BUT your school will definitely be annoyed. I know of teachers who changed their mind after indicating that they would renew and their schools were not thrilled. You still have time to change your mind before signing the contract.

Intention has no legal validity. You are free to choose elsewhere.

I'm in the same situation as you.

Any tips on how to break it to the teachers, so they'll be happy enough to give good reference/not make the last two months terrible?

Try and get them to change parts of the contract. If you let them know which points are deal breakers than maybe they'll be inclined to change it a bit. Is this a public school? It's probably the same contract for nearly all public school teachers.

I have the opposite situation. I said no, but now I want to stay but the office of education is not working with me. It's strange b/c people haven't even signed contracts yet and you can back out but not back in?

As others said, you are not bound to that school. It will really not make your school happy though. If I did it at my school, my VP would try to sink me. He's a nice guy, but if you cross him, he'll destroy you lol. What aren't you happy with?

I agree with everyone above, but I want to add something. Since your intent to renew likely goes to your provincial office of education (or some other government department, depending on your program,) you should let your coordinator know right away. If you are hoping to stay with your program, you might be out a job or stuck with the worst one because everyone else has already been assigned to a new position.

Wasnt sure if I wanted to stay or not and they asked for my decision the very next day. Now a recruiter wants to call my school and check my refrences. Not to sure what to tell my school

Well I'm not crazy about my contract because I can't get a raise.  I am in a public school that I love but that's bothersome for me. I can't stay here long term if I'm never going to get a raise. I have decided overall to stay but probably leave after my 6 month mark.  There is a job that I want in another location that opens then.  It might seem cruel to do but I want to treat the jobs here like I would any other back at home.

Are you already at the max pay? If so, you should get a 100,000won raise after you have worked there 2 consecutive years.

no, I'm not at max pay.  I'm in an I-EPIC  contract in Chungnam province. They only give you airfare if you don't resign, but if you do resign they don't pay for your airfare home for your 2 week vacation.

Also, I EPIC does not have pay raise. I have no idea at this point why I even said I would resign.

Just let my head co-teacher know I was canceling my renewal. Luckily she's fine with it and even being helpful. She did mention that it causes problems though. So it can be done, but some other teachers might not be as happy.

What does the 'intent to renew' document (that you signed) say about penalties for backing out?

Jessie, just to make things easier to understand, resign means to quit, re-sign means to continue working for your employer.

I have no idea what I EPIC is, sorry. If I were you I would re-sign and then move on to that other job in 6 months.

oskinny yeah. sorry. i was going to renew then leave after 6 months, but they do not pay for my flight home for my 2 week vacation! but if i weren't to renew they would give me an exit allowance to pay for a flight.  not to be cheap, but i think it's unfair when i can get money to go home & the next school will pay to bring me back!!

but overall i will probably end up staying and just leaving after 6 months.

It is normal that they do not to pay for the ticket home for the 2 week break. I haven't heard of anyone in EPIK or hagwon who got their 13th cheque adn flight money to go home if they renewed. Though I am sure there might be one or two people like that.  When I renewed, I used my 13th cheque money to go home for those 2 weeks.

There.  Fixed it for you.  Is it too hard to use correct English and spelling?  It's hard reading 'resign' when you meant 're-sign'.

Anyway, did you know that if you re-sign you get two weeks of vacation and 2 million won?  At least EPIK does.  Not sure what I-EPIC is.  Check your contract.

EPIK will give you a 2 Million Won renewal bonus within the first month of your next contract.  If you don't renew, you just get the 1.3 Million exit allowence.  You also get your severance.  The severence is guaranteed for completing each contract.
