English Drama festival, anyone done this before?
« on: June 16, 2011, 03:53:15 PM »
My principal more or less asked me to write a 10 minute play for the english drama festival(that includes 10 characters). Clearly, I am not going to be able to do this, as he wants there to be a life lesson and korean folklore involved. Luckily my co-teacher is from planet earth, and has suggested I just come up with the play, find one that the students will like and is pretty easy.
Has anyone done this before? I know they do it every year. I am just looking for scripts or titles, or something.
At this stage anything will likely help. Everything I tried to track down online makes one pay for the materials.
Thanks

I have been involved with this once before, a few years ago now.  It's a great experience for the kids.

I was lucky in that the teacher who was at my school before me had found and adapted a simple play from an online source.  When I arrived all that was required was rehearsal time (and lots of it!).

The students were super dedicated to practicing during their lunch hour and after school and it paid off because they won!

We all attended the competition and I have to say, after sitting through hours of these plays, the best ones are the ones that are simple.  Simple plot, simple dialogue, simple stage direction.  If you manage to find anything online and adapt it, do it with that in mind.

Some of my students did exactly this a few years ago (with about 8 characters) but effed if I'd be able to find the file since I've rebooted my computer. I could try to find the file but I'm a bit busy today and tomorrow. Send me a PM on Saturday to remind me and I'll try.

i've done a similar thing here in daejeon for the past two years. it's fun, if not really, really time consuming.

I was a judge at KOTESOL's competition last year and it was a lot of fun.  The kids did all sorts of plays but the type of play depends on the skill level of your kids. Younger kids do well with Aesop's Fables (they have a moral)

This thread is my baby, and my scripts are posted and other uses posted as well.  The kids loved acting, but mine were a little low-level overall and I had to make changes to simplify.  They had a great time though, and I thoroughly recommend drama as an English-usage activity.

I have been a judge at one of these and helped out with the one at my school. I recommend finding a children's story that they know, such as the three little pigs and have the students re-write it with a twist, such as "The real story of the little red riding hood". If you do a google search, you might find lots of material on this.

I have to say, I have now done one full year, where all my afternoon classes are English dramas.

I have had to rewrite several plays to add characters and make up songs. I have dramas for
1st through 6th grade and I have to teach them all to sing, dance, and act. Its a challenge.

Here's a site with the all the plays from Ready Action Theater. Comes with Cd's, workbook, book and you can download the teachers guide for the play with Korean and English dialog for the play, and there are masks for it as well.

You will probably need your co-teachers help since the site is written ALL Korean. But it should help you. The plays come in levels too - level 1 being the simplest and level 3 being the hardest.

Good Luck:)

Here is the perfect play.

There is an Indian teacher waiting in class.  Where are my students?  One kid shows up late and the teacher asks him his name and why he is late?  The kid says his name is Running Dog and he's late becuase he was throwing many rocks into the river.  Have 10 or more kids do the same thing.  Their name and them saying I was throwing many rocks into the river.

The last kid shows up dripping wet and introduces himself as Many Rocks.

That was a great play. All the parents laughed their asses off.

You can find many korean folk stories in English. So it should be easy to find one and write up the dialog from it and get it to take 10 minutes
They were even giving out a free book of them at some of the palaces to foreigners.
