After school teachers class?
« on: November 02, 2010, 03:47:42 PM »
Can anyone suggest what I should do as far the afterclass for Korean teachers are concerned. I am running out of ideas.

Four of them are young and one is old. I played a game of '30 seconds' with them last week and had a discussion class the week before. The game went down quite well and was enjoyed by all. The discussion class was dominated by the older guy who enjoys talking about serious topics but the others were bored and the one guy said that at that time of the day he is too tired to think hard. Also, with some of them, their levels of English are not at all good. Its very basic. The older teacher has however suggested that I have a class with 'religion' as a topic. I doubt that this would be appreciated by the other teachers as the one is an atheist and the rest have already told me not to make it too hard.

Any other games or suggestions that would keep the tone light-hearted??????

Im in the same situation as you.
Ive started teaching them pop songs, and giving them the lyrics with some words missing so they have to listen and fill in the missing words.
Also each day I bring up a new topic like movies or travel, and ask them 3 questions each on that topic. Its not the most exciting thing in the world but it gets everyone talking and thats what they want.......I think

play a game of "angels vs devils" choose topics like marriage and dating, or male and female roles (just stuff to keep things interesting and that everyone will have an opinion about)

Each side is either an angel and they are for the issue or a devil and they are against the issue. This works well in the teacher classes that I have had because many times the people who are an angel are actually against the issue but are forced to come up with ideas that support the argument. For example I had a group of older men having to argue in favor of men doing more house work and helping out during chouseok. They were going crazy during the debate.

This may be funhttp://teachingrecipes.com/2009/12/01/angel-vs-devil/

I have a teacher conversation class with all women.  They really enjoy talking about their families so I chose that as the theme of our 2nd class.  Their levels range from high-beginner to advanced.  I started the class by passing out the "My Girl" lyrics and we learned the song.  Then, I passed out the Family Intros graphic organizer wkst.  Using the whiteboard, we brainstormed words that could be used for each category.  After they filled-out the wkst, we introduced our families to the group.  For the last 15 minutes, we took turns choosing questions from the attached worksheet that I had cut into small strips and put into a cup.  If a question bombs, it's nice b/c you can easily choose another one.

Last semester I used these conversation questions: http://iteslj.org/questions/

The teachers said that they just wanted to talk.  So I would preview the questions, make a powerpoint listing the set of questions, and we would talk for the whole 40 minutes.

The abilities were quite varied.  There were my co-teachers who have a good handle on English and then there were teachers who could say hello and that was about it.  The lower level teachers would buddy up with a high level speaker.  The higher level teacher would translate and help him or her form an answer.

This semester, I wanted more structure so I bought a book and I am working from that.

At first I was really structured with mine. I also had different levels/interests from my teachers. I tried debating with them but they wanted to know everyday English instead. Like, what do you say at the bank. So then I started bringing in cookies and just talking about what they did on the weekends.
The following week another teacher brought in Mandu... soon my classes turned into little feasts and I bonded with the teachers. I would teach them a new expression or idiom every week that they would try to use in the class.
It was really fun and I ended up becoming friends with them! So, if you ever don't know what to do, just bring in food and ask them what they did last night. hahaha :)

Hey I posted some Ideas here http://waygook.org/index.php/topic,7278.msg54392.html#msg54392 mostly activities to get them talking and thinking in english...even if they are low level they are quite fun and gets them really thinking in english without realising...I just finnished another class with a "stranded activity where I got a whole bunch of pictures of various things from a high heel shoe to pliers around 40 items ....make up a story that they where ship wrecked or their plane crashed and they came across these items in a box they have a few minutes to choose four items they think will help them survive.... Also the variety of items gives lower level  teachers a chance to choose the items they feel comfortable talking about.... ok once they have choosen them split them up in groups and let them talk about why they chose each item then while they are talking tell them "oooow nooooooo!....theres been a big storm they have lost two of their items " so they should only choose two ....I should have mentioned this but in the begining of the class i made character cards which i let them draw out of a bag randomly with there name , occupation and I started them off with two skills they had and gave them a space to write other skills they can think of for their character...obviously within the context of their job and so forth...... ok heres where they come in so now they have only two items and their character cards ...you tell them there is only enough food for 5 of them so they have to vote people off (ok i had a class of ten so mine was only five you can change this depending on your class size)... so now they have to use there new identities and skills plus their items to convince others to keep them on the island...which starts a debate which is pretty fun as they all go around the table saying why they should be kept on the island and why others are weaker...after this you get them to vote and there rest is self explanatory..............ill be posting those materials later ...gotta get to class hope that helps .... :-)

On Friday, I did a "whats in your bag?" discussion. Everyone took turns talking about an item that they had on them that they held dear to their hearts. The stories are awesome and we learned a lot about each other.
