High School - Interviews with students and celebs
« on: June 24, 2011, 12:21:22 pm »
This is for first or second grade high school students.

In this class, I kicked-off the concept of "interviewing" by showing the students this clip of popstar Rain speaking English in an interview for Time magazine:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAjqR8pNVD0&feature=related

I then showed them this Prezi:
http://prezi.com/gmheqv_sim3h/interview/

This prezi focuses on the expression: "What brought you to Korea?"

I then distributed a worksheet (attached) in which students could formulate their OWN interview questions in groups. Emphasize that these questions could cover ANYTHING.

Students then should interview EACH OTHER in front of the classroom based on these interview questions. Also, for a few lessons I arranged for some of my friends in North America to skype the class. The students would then have to interview my friend via skype, using their questions. Chose whichever works for you.

Usain Bolt Interview: Board/Sentence Grab exercise
« Reply #3 on: August 29, 2011, 03:35:13 pm »
Hi, I teach at my high school Wednesday and Thursday so I thought I'd share this exercise I'm going to try (can't really post it after trialling it due to it being about the Daegu athletics this week).

Most of my high school students have low level ability but I'm hoping they'll recognise the sentences according to length, word repetition etc. I'll probably play the video once, then repeat it with the sound only so the students aren't distracted visually - they'll have to look at the sentence strips anyway. It's based on a classic board grab but with 36 students per class I'm gonna do it in groups of four, so what's that - 36 divided by 4...!  :o 9 sets of strips! Good job i have an easy day tomorrow  ;)

Haven't had time to make a PPT for the answers yet I'm afraid.

I want to try the interview exercise at the end despite the low level of the students - they need to work on more dialogues - so if you can think of more scenarios to work around please comment.

Happy teaching!

That's a great idea!  My kids have been talking about K'Naan a lot: I'm going to try to find a good interview with him!

Thank you for this!  I'm looking for ideas to use with a K'naan interview.

I was considering doing an interview class and this idea has really enforced the idea for me, I taught my students about South Africa so I'm thinking about trying to connect with one of them through skype, hopefully the kids will go for it.

This is a great idea!  The students will stay focused because it is something/someone they can relate to.  Great idea!

Interview skills: discussing pride (K'naan): Advanced
« Reply #9 on: September 14, 2011, 12:49:58 pm »
I used thie lesson with a very strong group of high school students.  We talked about pride, and synonyms for pride.  We looked at the K'naan video from the world cup as a jumping off point for feeling pride because we were talking about K'naan, particularely 'Waving Flag', while we shared music we like in previous classes.

After the music video I showed a clip of K'naan being interviewed about the song (both clips are in the ppt.).  We talked about how while it's obvious that K'naan felt pride, he is humble as well.  Most of these students will be interviewing in English for university, so learing vocabulary to use when talking about their accomplishments is important to them.

Again, this was a strong group, but I used it again with a group of average grade one high school students.  I explained the interview with K'Naan clearly and just asked them to try to hear the parts I had explained, and to watch K'naan's face to see if he seemed proud in a good way or in a bragging way.  We didn't focus as much on vocabulary, instead we mainly worked on dialogue about something they felt proud about.  They were able to complete the interviews on their own, and although I don't think they got as much out of the lesson, it went really well and they seemed to enjoy it nearly as much as the stronger group.

I got some of the interview ideas from another post here on waygook.  Feel free to use parts of this and build on it any way you'd like!

More K-pop artists attempting to speak english - big hit w girls.
Got the sense that they feel better knowing that English is both difficult - but an attainable skill

Don't waste 7 minutes of your life, skip to about 7:30 for some English conversation.  I don't know if it's really usable like this...  But I would love to get more suggestions of K stars using English!

CNN Interview with BoA
« Reply #12 on: October 25, 2011, 07:21:37 am »
I went to Kyobo a few weeks ago and bought a little book called "Take-Out CNN", which has CNN news pieces/interviews/etc with Korean translations and vocabulary explanations, etc. During midterms I put together this lesson, which is more or less a scanned version of the interview with BoA in the book with some additional explanations and examples (e.g., YouTube videos of BoA's commercial endorsements). Also included are the mp3 files of the interview that came with the book. Regrettably this lesson is a bit "high level" so I only expect it to work for classes with advanced proficiency levels (I only have one class like that). Hopefully you can find a use for it!
