Is your tax deducted monthly?
« on: June 02, 2011, 05:07:28 PM »
Hi,

This question is for public school teachers that have to pay tax (not tax-exempt under the 2-year rule).

I worked at a hagwon for 2 years.  Recently, I made the switch to public school.  I understand I'm no longer tax exempt.

Here's my question:

Does your school deduct your tax every month?  My school is not.  They say they will deduct it at the end of the year (something I'd prefer they not do).  I'm pretty sure they should be deducting it monthly.  I know the Korean teachers get monthly deductions.

I need to convince my school to do monthly deductions if this is in fact right.
C is for cookie, that's good enough for me.

Yeah I'm in the same boat.  I noticed after my first pay but then forgot to ask my main co-teacher about it.  She's now on hiatus for a month, so I wasn't too sure.  I did hear a rumour about this end of year pay up and yeah that sucks.  I would rather they take it off every pay too.

Me, too. I've asked a couple of times and have given up. Guess I'll just be paying it all at the end of the year. Not looking forward to that.

Mine gets taken out each month. It is SFA though, only around 35,000won per month, which worries me a bit.

Keep on topic, the OP is requesting specific advice regarding the legality of the their current situation, and is requesting advice from those who have had in similar experiences.

To repose the question, is it at the discretion of the school to chose how they file taxes for foreigners, or does the OP have the ability to choose?

Not sure if the OP has had this problem fixed or has found the answer they were looking for, but I was in a similar situation last year. I had just recently changed schools (at my old school they took my tax out monthly) and I found out that my new school (now my current school) wasn't taking out tax monthly. I asked my co-teacher to ask them if they could take it out monthly as I preferred it that way instead of a lump sum at the end of the financial year. They never did it and I had to pay back a large amount of tax at the end of the financial year. I renewed at the school and there was a change in admin so I asked my co-teacher to ask them again if I could have my tax taken out monthly and the new woman working in admin had no problem doing this. My tax now gets taken out monthly, so I assume it's just up to the guys in admin if they want to do it this way or not.
