job search and reference letters
« on: July 26, 2011, 08:39:19 PM »
I'm currently in a good EPIK job situation but am interested in exploring university options for my next contract.  One application prefers a reference from my Korean employer.  My initial thought is that it isn't wise to play my cards openly since if I don't change jobs I may just stay in my current situation.   But I know a reference from my current school would most certainly be positive and help in my job search!

My question is, in Korea is it a bad idea to get references from your current job?

I would tell your current boss first, maybe tactful in how you say it but I would explain how your trying to further your career and stuff. Make it sound like your trying a major step forward.
If you can, do interviews and stuff but don't give your bosses details until their happy with all your other attributes and the job is just waiting on a good reference.

I would give the same general advice. Be honest and say "Hey, I am applying for these specific jobs. If I don't get them, I would want to stay here. I am applying because these jobs are jobs that give me the chance to stay in Korea longer and experience more teaching with a different age group. I like it here a lot, but I do want to see if I can work with a different age group."

That kind of thing. Be nice about it. If you talk to your CT, bring some coffee or something fun. Don't make it sound like you are going to quit your contract or anything like that. And make sure that you let them know that you are very interested in the school you are currently at and that you hope it doesn't offend anybody.

Be polite about it, sincere, and gentle. Do tell them...
