Religion in school?
« on: August 25, 2011, 05:08:11 PM »
I'd like to preface by saying that I work at an English Village....

We recently have a new owner who is doing some really marvelous stuff for us. Pay raises, abiding to our contracts, (including rewriting them for our benefit), and buying the classroom materials we've been asking for. She is extremely religious and I respect that, but I myself am not religious and neither are my co-workers. We've been told that they are going to be changing one of our booths and putting in a "Church Booth". I don't really know how to feel about this. Coming from America we aren't allowed to teach religion in public schools (BUT we are technically a Hagwon)

Can they make us teach it? What about my co-workers who are of another religion than Christian? How would you feel? What would you do?

It depends on what they are asking you to teach.  If you are doing no more than explaining the terminology of the physical church itself, I'd be ok with it.  If they asked you to stray into doctrine, I'd not be too comfortable with it.

That said, if it is a hagwon and the owner wants to use the place to evangelize, that's probably her right.  Does your contract stipulate anything about religion or religious materials at all?

Of course they can do it, its a private business. I would pick your battles here, and this is probably one you should just suck it up and do, especially considering how good your new owner seems to be for you. Things could be much worse than having to do some 50 minute thing on religion. If its really tough, focus on morals instead. They coincide with most religions and there is nothing wrong with teaching how to be a good person.

As per Waygook.org's TOS:

"Amendment two:

Posts or threads about religion or matters related, with the exception of providing links to the name, location, and times of officially recognized religious services may result in said post(s) being edited or thread being locked. The reason for this stance is that whilst freedom of expression is otherwise welcomed, such content is provocative and potentially inflammatory and moderators wish to prevent flamewars from occuring."

Thread locked. Please PM (private message) the OP your thoughts.

Thanks!
