American?  Very likely, but no one in the military has dreads...

Hey there, who cares what nationality he was. This effects everyone equally. They look at us all the same. Now for those of you who are familiar with Korea and Koreans;they see eachother as one big family and would not include anything in a video to make their "grandfather" look bad. Was he wrong yes, but we will never know what in-sighted such anger. Frankly Koreans, like every nationality can be very racist. Until you have had a Korean spit on you, like I have, don't judge what you don't know.
You'll take it with a smile, thank you!

No, they don't look at us all the same.  Many Koreans today are a lot more sophisticated than that, especially if they have lived abroad, but it can take a long time to change someone's mind here.

Believe it or not, you can find (much more polite) ways to rebut Koreans who are rude or speak impolitely to you etc, but you have to do so in a way they understand and are willing to accept or tolerate--Korean.  And once you have done so, it is a good idea to follow the social norms and either drop it, or pay the price for escalating such incidents.

I haven't been spat on by a Korean - I can't think of any reason a Korean would actually spit on me though since I'm pretty respectful in general but here's what I do know: He sounds American so, yeah, a distinction is going to be made.  Koreans can and do tell us apart at times.  I don't know what incited this response but whatever it is, his behaviour was disgusting, excessive and unnecessary.  Yes, every nation is a little racist and most people are at least a little racist.  The guy's response to the ajeossi was also racist though.

The only point with which I do agree with you is that the repercussions of this incident will affect all of us equally.

We're not going to name names and name places of work.

I also highly doubt the guy who made the video was taping before the fight started.  It has nothing to do with trying to make their "grandfather" or the entire Korean race look better - the video just doesn't exist.

I hope they put this guy in jail for a few days, then deported him and forced him to take anger management classes. Though not likely, I can still dream. I have seen such things happen too many times on the east coast back in the states. There is a lack of respect across America among all classes, races, religions and skin colors.  I wish people of all backgrounds had more respect for each other as human beings. It seems we must first teach the meaning of respect before we can expect it.    wow! There are a lot of definitions of respect any one feel like adding their definition of respect?

If anyone is interested, I interviewed one of his students on my way to visiting the US.   [removed]

It is dangerous and reckless to provide names/locations on the Internet, especially as tech-savvy as Koreans are.  Not calling Koreans hairy, but it's akin to having a conference with a pack of ravenous wolves, teaching them how to use a GPS system and telling them when Lil Miss Riding Hood is going to arrive.

  Excellent description.

Yeah, giving the guy's name and work place is kind of like gathering the mobs and offering to light the torches then stepping back and pleading ignorance of the matter.  Regardless of how disgusting his behaviour is, it's not fair to mention info like that on a public forum.

Well, saying he worked for X school wouldn't be a reflection on that school.   Even professional psychologists can't predict human behaviour well enough to predict with 100% certain who is going to flake out.   In fact, I know of a study that proves that psychologists are no better than the average person at this.

::)  You missed the point: It's not about the school but the potential harm that could come to the teacher concerned if people who are angry enough to seek retribution on this guy were to see that information on a public forum.  ie.  Post the guy's name and workplace online - potentially angry Koreans/foreigners/avengers see it - potentially gather mob, light torches and proceed to seek revenge/retribution/whatever they may seek = REALLY BAD SITUATION.

Something in Korean laws is a good reason not to post the schools info, sure the guy acted like a douche and his accent makes it obvious where he's from but I'm sure there will be someone very soon taking his spot.

You do realize lots of people read these threads and translate as required for other sites/media sources.
What you write may just become a quote somewhere else.

An angry man hits another  man on a bus after an argument! I am sure this happens quite often in  many cities around the world. Why the fuss? Is it because one of the men is a foreigner? I guess so.

I hope that this issue slips into oblivion and media trivia.  I also hope that justice is done, and then Mr. H gets a new chance in life, probably outside of Korea.  Good luck, Mr. H.  You screwed up, but your life is far from over.  Time to do the time, if that is required, and move on.

Wanting an update on the bus guy.

Did that guy get canned and made to fly home.  I'm sure he is a fine guy but not teacher quality for Korea.  Can anyone update this?

Thanks Madison79

They checked the CCTV tape from the bus and found that the foreigner was provoked.

However, it is possible that he was talking too loud on his phone which may have disturbed the man.  This, of course, can not be confirmed.

I wonder what Korean netizens are making of this story.

The Korean guy is probably a national hero by now.

The police said nothing about CCTV footage...nor did they say that the man was 'provoked'.  They actually put the incident down down to a 'misunderstanding'.  The police said that he 'had apparently misunderstood the old man for saying a discriminating word to him.'

If they had CCTV footage...then why wouldn't they have been able to confirm that the man was talking too loudly on the phone, and annoying the older man?

The police also stated that -

Quote
The perpetrator, identified only as a 24-year-old English instructor, told the police that he was upset by the old man telling him to “shut up” and felt that the old man was saying something in Korean that was discriminatory toward black people.

The man also admitted that his actions were wrong and said that he was sorry, police said.

The above is all from the Korea Times article that I linked too in the blog post before.  Where did you hear about all of this CCTV footage?
