Pop, rock or jazz lyrics for university classes.
« on: August 30, 2011, 05:26:54 AM »
I'm looking for some songs with thoughtful and intelligent lyrics (but not too difficult) for mid-level university students. Naturally, John Lennon's 'Imagine' ranks up there, but I'd appreciate hearing of any other suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

I've used 'If I Had a Million Dollars' by The Barenaked Ladies. It's a good one for practicing conditional sentences.  When talking about music genres in the past, I made a playlist on Grooveshark. You can register for free, save a playlist, and then access it from any computer by going to the website.

also for "if" conditional sentences is Beyonce's "If I were a Boy."  could get into fun discussion about gender roles and perceptions!

I'm not sure exactly how well it'd work (might be hard to understand), but what about Foster the People's "pumped up kicks," with discussions of violence?  you could play a sweet dub-step dance video that someone's got posted on youtube, too, that goes w/ that song.

Final suggestion is U2's "still haven't found what I'm looking for."  good practice of present perfect tense.

I use Lyle Lovett's "If I had a boat" for If clauses and for talking about dreaming

also exposes them to music other than pop

With the passing of Robin Gibb I accidently found an excellent Youtube Karaoke song, the 1975 hit 'Jive Talkin,'  To top it off, it's a live concert as well...

The making of Jive talk from movie Airplane via move "Shaft"...

Barbara Billingsly speaks(interprets) jive in Airplane...

Just watch those contest shows on TV - American Idol, The Voice US, UK, etc.

Most Korean university students have experienced singing rooms since their middle school or even primary school years.

Now there are shows in Korea such as Super Star K, the Voice Korea, etc. which students are into.

Whatever is popular on these shows the kids would know.  Beyonce, Maroon 5 "Moves Like Jagger," anything by Bruno Mars, etc.

Most of us PS teachers teach Fool's Garden "Lemon Tree" so they might know that one.

Jamelia "Superstar" and Lighthouse Family "High" are really good.
