How to get students to stop swearing???

summerthyme:
Do you guys have this problem?  My students drop swear words [MOD EDIT: removed profanity] like they're nothing.  I don't know how to effectively say how much they shouldn't say those words without making them want to say them MORE because they know they are bad.  Any ideas?

ano33:
Does it actually offend you or are you just trying to play moral police?  If it doesn't offend you then just ignore it and act like you didn't hear them or act like you don't know what it means.  If you react to it then they will want to say it more.  Just my two cents, take it for what you will.

truongt:
I don't know how old your students are (or how well-behaved they are), but I stopped class and straight up told my fifth graders that I didn't want to hear that sort of language in class. I haven't had a problem since.

summerthyme:
@ano - it's not a matter of being the moral police.  Part of the reason we're here is to teach about our culture AND the language, and in my culture at least language like that is deemed inappropriate and should not be used by 14 year olds.

@truongt - I might try to do that if I hear it in class again.  I teach middle school kids who for the most part are pretty good students and listen to me.  Probably won't work with the high schoolers though, but they usually sleep more than swear so that hasn't really been a problem with them ha ha.

I usually stop class as well and tell my high schoolers they can say that stuff anywhere else, but not in front of me.  It doesn't offend me, but there is a respect issue there if students feel comfortable saying bad words in front of a teacher.
