Does anyone know any good Ice Breaker games?

Tshego:
Hi a good oen we came across at this years orientation was guess whats in the box. I haven't started teaching yet but I have been told that guessing games are always fun and that the kids really do enjoy getting to know more about you. Basically all you do is a ppt of certain objects or pics of yourself doing stuff you like and conceal those with squares that make a box but leave the centre for a first peeping hole. And during class you just peel away the box to let them see whats in the box.

Any other ideas?

I like to do 2 games as ice breakers, but they are also good for the end of the the year.

Circle Dash:
This game is really good for group bonding.  I like to think of it as a good warm up, too.
Students stand in a circle and there is one person in the middle.  I usually start as the person in the middle.
Students must quietly communicate to switch places in the circle by using eye contact.  When they switch places, the person in the middle will try to take one of their spots.  If they are successful, then the student without a spot will be in the middle.  Repeat.
*This can be a little hard to explain for some classes, so I usually do an example by choosing 2 students at random and make them switch.

The students have responded very well to it and I think any age can do it.   It may take some time for students to warm up to it, but they will usually participate.

Big Wind Blows:
I have seen many variations on this game in the thread already.  I've changed the name to "Everyone who..."  Students grab a chair and form a circle.  One person stands in the middle (I start in the middle).  I tell the Students that the person in the middle must say "Everyone who" + a commonality they might have.  I usually start with , "Everyone who is wearing glasses."  If the students are wearing glasses they must get up and find a new seat.  The next student repeats another commonality in English.    You can also add "Hurricane."  If someone in the middle says, "Hurricane," then everyone gets up and finds a new seat.

*I usually don't explain commonality too much and just encourage them to say things in English.  They usually focus on clothing and appearance.  It might also be difficult to get them to say "Everyone who," because they might just blurt something out.    It is better to focus on visual because saying something such as liking a band, they might not get up.

I do these games together if I have the time.  It has been very successful.   Remember to tell students to be careful and mindful of other people and the space.

My co-teachger today had a really good activity the kids really enjoyed.

She divided the class into 2 teams (the first time with a class of 6, the second with a class of 13).  She then had made a slideshow with facts about her and the teams had to decide if the facts were true of false.  We kept score on the board.  It then lead to a game where every student wrote a fact about themselves and classmates had to guess if it was true.  If they fooled more than half the class, they got a piece of candy.

We did this with elementary grades 5 and 6. If the students were unable to think up questions in English, they could write it in Korean and my co-teacher would translate and I would help with spelling.

The kids go, "Ahhhh!!  This is so hard teacha."  After you let them see their drawings, they go wild with laughter and it's a real fun way to break the ice.
You can find the best picture in the class and reward the student.

This is such a great idea! I will definitely be trying it out with my afternoon classes! They are usually so tired by then so it would be nice to see them have a laugh :)
