Drama Class
« on: October 11, 2010, 05:04:27 pm »
Hi,

I have been asked to put together a short drama skit/script/item for performance at a school festival by my all-boys after school class. There are about 13-17 of them and they consist of Grade 1 and 3 kids with varying levels of English. It needs to be simple, but all of them must get at least one word to say. Any ideas? They said I could do a song as well, but my strength is drama, so I would prefer to do something along those lines. I only have three weeks, and they want the rehearsals to start tomorrow!
Any ideas anyone? Thanks.

I don't know if this is too difficult but it is a version of Casey at the Bat that kids can act out. Boys might like the baseball theme and you can adjust the language to suit. Take a look and see if it will work. Good luck!

I've just been told that I have to do an after school English Drama Club two times a week. Sounds like a fun idea.

I'm sure some of you have done this type of class before so I'm looking for ideas and resources.

The KT said that there would probably be a performance but it could also just be them doing dialogues with each other. I'm thinking of having them write their own play but who knows how that might pan out. Do you guys know of any books or websites that would have some easy plays or dialogues for the kiddies?

I'm also thinking of throwing some debate in as well as the standard drama club games that I played in high school.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!

A choral verse would be a great idea since it allows all the children to participate equally, but not have to feel shy and exposed about doing so. I would suggest a Roald Dahl Revolting Rhymes poem.

I've done a drama CA class and for the most part it was quite a bit of fun. Having a performance to prepare for really helps to motivate them, as there's no better motivation than not wanting to look stupid in front of the whole school. If the class consists of mixed grades you might have a lot of trouble getting the younger students to contribute much in terms of brainstorming and creation, as this will usually be dominated by the older ones. You might even want to prepare different skits with different grades. If they're into music, a scene from a musical might work well.

Round 3...intermediate level script and workbook

Hi Ectofuego...

Thank you so much for posting these. I too will be teaching an after school speaking class and I thought it would be great to use some of your scripts to do a small performance.. I've noticed that you have items in an 'hwp' file... I can't seem to download it. Any tips?

I'm in exactly the same boat. THANK YOU! I had no idea where to find appropriate materials, or any materials at all actually. I have a dance back ground some I've played some theater games in the past and I know about stage tech and production, but I've no clue when it comes to having them actually act or what they should read...

.hwp is a korean word file.   Hanwoo processor or something like that.  Just search .hwp viewer on google and it should work fine.

If you want more files, message me your email address and I will send you everything I have.  I have audio files, flash cards, and alot of other stuff for managing a drama

also consider preparing them to enter the KOTESOL drama festival.  It is usually held in November in Jeonju and is open to everyone.  Last year kids from about Grade 3 through high school/college entered and did everything from fairy tales to original works.  Lots of fun!

I also had a drama class dropped into my lap my first semester in Korea and an idea I had that my students grew to like was write down emotions (e.g. anger, shock, lovesick) onto little strips of paper, dump them in a cup and have the students draw one out to demonstrate/practice. Stage two was suggesting verbal utterances and gestures to reinforce the facial expressions. For example, for guilty, I had them look shifty, clap their hands to their cheeks and say, "Uh-oh."

English Scripts for Plays
« Reply #18 on: April 01, 2011, 09:37:16 am »
So, I'm wondering how many other teachers out there get hounded by their coteachers to "find" a play for the students to present in their public school, or for their English camp (our district FINALLY got rid of the "play/presentation" component of the English camps . . . everyone hated doing it).

So, I'm posting the ones I did and wrote . . .  please, if you use them, please give me a little credit for the hours I poured into writing and modifying these into actual English --- so many plays my teacher finds have horrid English.

Here are the plays I've written, rewritten, and adapted for use in school . . .  it sorta sucks when you spend 8 hours on something, and then your coteacher says they don't like it . . . I hope they won't ask me to find another play. Here are all the plays I've written so far . . .  perhaps you can post yours so that we can avoid the 8-hour rewrite just to find out our coteachers don't like it.

Snow White -- Original "Snow White" play rewritten in REAL English with funny additions for Korean Culture

Snow White set in a Korean Middle School -- I wrote this, and it worked fine, but the English is a bit complicated and has a lot of word-jokes . . . one of my summer camp students translated the subtitles I made into Korean .  . .  see PowerPoint file.

HOOD -- funny version of Robin Hood by Geoff Bamber . . . I found this play online, it was 50 minutes, so I spent this week rewriting it into a shorter version  . . . also made the English easier and simpler.

--------------

Yeah, I bet there are other people out there who had to write, rewrite, and modify plays for their school or camp . . . it'd be nice to share the ones we've already performed (I know there are competitions, and the original Snow White play I rewrote won our district's competition) . . . take these and modify them for your own usage, and please upload ones that you've written and/or performed, and don't mind sharing.

If someone uses one of these plays, and performs them successfully, please thank the original poster for the countless hours that went into preparing the scripts.
