Good Korean intensive language courses?
« on: September 09, 2011, 09:43:26 AM »
Hello! Does anyone know of any great intensive Korean language programs in Seoul? Preferbly on the west side of Seoul somewhere? I would like to start sometime in the winter.
I am Korean American and I would like to brush up on my reading and writing.

Any suggestions would do, thank you!

I like Kumon.  For 34,000 won a month a tutor comes to my home every week and teaches a lesson.  She leaves me with a workbook with homework to study during the week.  It is awesome.  www.kumon.co.kr/  you need enough Korean/ a co-t to get through the website and set up your first appointment.
I am at a low level, but I have a friend who uses it for higher level reading and writing.

That sounds great!  Sometimes I almost wish I lived in Seoul.  My Korean studies are at a standstill - there is a shortage of those 'Korean friends' in my area to give me some speaking practice...

Koreanclass101.com looks really good. I have also heard that Seogang University has online classes. Does anyone know any other free online korean classes. I have heard of podcasts such as talktomeinkorean.com which can be very helpful on the go.

If you are able to speak some Korean already, why don't you ask a Korean language teacher at your school? I think he/she will be happy to help you out if they are not too busy.

I just recently got a textbook for beginning Korean and it's awesome!  It's called Korean made easy for beginners and comes with an audio CD and has really useful pictures which show the tounge placement/mouth movements for the different sounds..so far so good!

Wicked. How long does the tutor spend with you? Can you request more visits a week over time? And is it full immersion or can they speak English as well :).

I would see what's up at a YMCA, if you're near one. Daegu's Y has kick-ass intensive classes, anyway.

there is a korean language hagwon in the hongdae area called GANADA. they teach korean to foreigners from all different countries, so classes are conducted only in korean. many of the teachers speak another language, but not necessarily English (many speak chinese or japanese as they get many students from china and japan). i did a month long program with them before and really liked it. i like the way their textbook is organized.

It is only 10 minutes, my partner and I do it together, so it adds up to 20.  We really like it and find it challenging.  We are in a small city in the south, I think there is Kumon across the country.  It is immersion.  She speaks very little English.

This sounds great. I wanted to do a university Korean course but my working hours won't allow it, but I'll definitely look into this.

Hi there,

I am interested in Kumon classes. Looks like the price is now 38,000. But does the tutor only spend 10mins with you? (This seems very short. I guess most of it is just studying independently?) I couldn't find anything on the website about how long the classes are. Also, it looks like the course is meant for Korean children learning Korean. Have you found that it is practical for you? Does your tutor tailor the materials to be more suitable for adults? What level of Korean do they teach?

Thank you!
