Best online Korean Study Guide?
« on: September 09, 2011, 02:52:12 pm »
Hi,

Having abandoned studying a long time ago, I've decided to get back into it.  I know there are a few sites offering Korean lessons, some better than others.  Some paid, some free.

Does anyone have any good experiences with certain sites or bad experiences with others?

Steve.

There are a bunch of podcasts for Korean that are freebies through itunes. Learning to speak korean and korean word of the day are good ones. I just toss a bunch on my ipod and listen throughout the day.

The one I have found to be the best is talktomeinkorean.com.
I really like their podcast/mp3 lessons and the accompanying pdfs and worksheets.  I think they do a good job of making everything understandable and relevant.  Also the lessons are in digestible chunks.

Whatever you choose, I recommend making a syllabus and regularly reviewing what you learned.

@BrianFlanagan: What are the names of the podcasts that you recommend?  I like talktomeinkorean.com.  Any other good ones you found?  I personally couldn't listen to Kimchi Girls for more than 20 seconds.

Like the previous two posters, I found talktomeinkorean to be the best in terms of having good lessons, supplementary material, and keeping my interest. They also offer free workbooks so you can review every 10-15 lessons.

http://www.arirang.co.kr/Tv/Lets_Whats_On.asp?PROG_CODE=TVCR0110&sys_lang=Eng

This comes on TV too, but all the episodes are on this site.  It's a little cheesy, but it does help.

i'm trying out www.livemocha.com right now

its too soon to say how good it is. but so far, so good.  its kind of like a wiki for language learning it seems like, in that it is free and there are occasionally typos

Hi there,

Besides my language school program, I used these websites :

http://korean.sogang.ac.kr/ This is the Sogang Uni lessons uploaded online.

And this one : http://ezcorean.com/ Really recommanded for all kinds of grammar and vocabulary too.

These two were really helpful when I was in intermediate level. Hope it helps.

I enjoy Talk To Me In Korean.  The PDF guides are very helpful and are great for review, so you don't have to listen to the podcasts to review.

I also use a flashcard program that I absolutely LOVE.  It's called Byki.     www.byki.com  They have about 95 languages available and can be used for free.  They also have a deluxe version for $70 which you can use for as many languages as you like.  The deluxe version allows you to graphically compare your pronunciation with the native speaker, take tests, use a few activities and create your own lists.  This is very helpful.  Both versions will keep track of how quickly you learn the words and force you to review them in 3 days, a week, or a few weeks later depending on how quickly you master it.  This gets the words into your long term memory.  I love this program so much, I am currently writing language resources for Kosraean, a pacific island language I became fluent in last year.  As such, they gave me the deluxe version for free.

I have to agree with all the posts above - by far the best I have found is Talk to Me in Korean.

The lessons are easy, short and well put together with PDF and audio, they also have a bunch of videos that you can watch about random other things like colors, numbers and other things.

I like that they take the time to pronounce the words really slow, they say them many times at different speeds so you can really hear what it should sound like and imitate.  I have tried a few words out at work with my Korean colleagues and they have been really impressed with my pronunciation.

I also like that they are quite short, especially at the start.  You just learn one or two things, thats good if you don't have much time and if you do you can always just go onto the next lesson.  I am not very good at remembering things so its nice that its just a little bit each time then I can work on memorizing it before I go onto the next bit.

I have just seen that they have a new pay site and among other things you can post your sentences on there and they will check them and correct them if need be.

I agree, TalkToMeInKorean.com is a great resource for anyone wishing to learn some useful Korean. I've been supplementing my college course with the audio file downloads they provide - usually I'll listen to the lessons when I'm riding my bike. It's awesome to take advantage of the native speaker, and get to practice my prononciation while no one is around to notice :)

I use livemocha.com  and TalkToMeInKorean.com.  They are both useful and very different from each other.

I really like livemocha.  It has many nice features that you won't find on other programs.  The lessons are grammar based.  They follow a similar format to Rossetta stone in that you read/ listen to sentences and choose a matching image.
The part I like is the speaking and writing sections.  Each speaking and writing lesson gets sent to multiple people that are fluent in Korean and learning another language.  They review your submission and give you feed back.  You make friends with learners all over the world. I started it as a "newcomer" when I was just learning the alphabet and it was too difficult.  I recommend waiting until you are a high beginner and can write basic sentences and  phonetically decode written Korean.
Livemocha can be free if you respond to other learners submissions and write cultural notes.

TalkToMeInKorean.com does a nice job of introducing the concepts of the languge and adding cultural notes.  The reviews and quizzes are interesting and fun, and they try to add interactive features to test yourself.

I've used Sogang Uni's textbook and it's a bit slow.. I think for faster learners like me, the online site is better for learning.

It has audio/visual/text if you guys like interesting dialogues with videos.
I've used it and learned most of the basic grammatical phrases, and daily vocab.
Oh yeah, and it's FREE.

I realized how much money I wasted for a textbook that wasn't as convenient as the one I found on their website. durr. :blank:

and you're welcome  ;)

Just tried out livemocha.com for the first time and it's great. Really easy to use and really well structured. Just need to keep myself motivated!
