Language exchanges outside of Seoul? (Daejeon)
« on: July 01, 2011, 04:15:55 AM »
Most language exchanges are in Seoul :(, I've been trying to find some exchanges in Daejeon, or maybe Jeonju.  I've tried all the online websites, but post you need to pay to access member profiles and things, they largely just end up being spam.  I've tried mylanguageexchange, hanlingo, livemocha and interpals, none of them really got me any results.  I realize language exchanges can be super fickle, as numerous threads pointed out.  If there aren't any really dedicated language exchanges in Daejeon, would anyone want to help put one together?

There is a very active amount of people doing language exchanges on couchsurfing.org

Another good one that is totally free and no bullshit (ie SPAM) is www.conversationexchange.com

On conversation exchange, you could at least find people who are interested in doing Skype exchanges if you can't find anyone in your area.

I just  heard the other week (from a friend in Seoul of all places) that there is a specific cafe that sets up language exchanges up near Chungnam Uni in Daejeon. Ridiculously far for me, but if anyone has the address or details, it'd save me trekking randomly around Yuseong looking for it.

Have you tried asking friends/co-teachers to introduce you to people?  Also, if you see someone on the train or in a coffee shop studying English, have a chat with them.  I met one language exchange partner that way.  Many Koreans studying English would kill to have an actual foreigner as a language exchange partner.  You are definitely the one that is in demand and can afford to be choosy.

Be aware that "language exchange" often means "date."  If you're serious, try to find someone older, or a member of a gender that isn't romantically interested in you.
