Looking for a Teacup Yorkie / Yorkshire Terrier
« on: December 09, 2011, 04:28:41 PM »
Greetings,
I am looking to buy or adopt a Teacup Yorkie / Yorkshire Terrier. Any ideas where I can find a pet store in Seoul, South Korea that sells them for a reasonable price? I also check out ARK (Animal Rescue Korea), but no luck of a baby Teacup Yorkie. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I've seen quite a few yorkies in pet shops but I'd caution you against buying them. I've had friends who bought dogs from pet shops but the puppies died within a few months from diseases. I'm sure this is not always the case or they'd be out of business, but I wouldn't chance it.

Perhaps you should be more flexible and find a dog on ARK. There are plenty of adorable pups in need of a home.

I definitely caution against the pet store pups... the reason the pups die young is because they are weaned too early! It annoys me so much that they do that... it benefits no one!

I second the be wary of pet shop pups comments. They're weaned way too early and that quite often means they have social and health issues. Puppies also take a lot of time. If you want to get them toilet trained you have to be home a lot to take them out/move them to the pee pad and they often bark when you leave them (so if you get a puppy make sure your landlord is cool with that)

'Teacup' is not a special breed, it's often just a dog that was born prematurely. This can come with a ton of health problems too.

There are HEAPS of dogs in the shelters that aren't on ARK.

KAPS (https://www.facebook.com/#!/KAPSAnimals) always has yorkies young and old.

If you don't want to voyage down to Daegu though the pound in Seoul is KARAMA (http://www.karma.or.kr/community_7.asp?BbsNo=&page=1&SearchField=&addr_id=&SearchkindName=&SearchkindName_etc=&SearchWords=) there are bound to be some yorkies there. There is a great vet at the Dr Pet clinic who can help you get one. His name is Dr Choi, phone: 3443-8275

Please don't buy a pet shop dog. It so often ends in tears or costs a fortune in vet fees and besides, you'd be supporting the puppy farms that supply the petshops.

PM me is you want any help adopting :)

Thank you for all your comments. I will check out ARK, KAPS, and Karma.
I been reading numerous of post thread about getting a puppy in Korea, and it seems that many people recommend adopting one from the shelter vs. buying from a pet store. I greatly appreciate all your comments.

I can vouch as a KAPS Coordinator that we often have yorkie pups and adults at the shelter. If you are interested, please send an email to KAPS.Adoption(at)gmail.com

You could save a life! Pet store puppies are often ill. They are always highly priced. And buying one supports the puppy mill (dog breeding farm... over!breeding) industry.

Finally, though one person suggests, KAPS is in Daegu, but if you are wanting to commit to a pet for a lifetime, a single trip to KAPS should be nothing! Also, once you go through the process - a meeting is scheduled. Should the meeting go well, but you prefer not to take a pup that day, you would still be approved to adopt and once the right pup comes along, we could contact you and update you and possibly arrange a Waggin Train to transport the pup up to you! We really love to work hard for our babies in need. Please consider adoption.
