Skipping Winter Camp
« on: September 19, 2011, 04:29:34 PM »
The School term ends on the 23rd December and there will be about 2months vacation time. I know for a fact that there will be winter camps (atleast 3-4 weeksof it). If I tell my school No i won't do, I'm going back to the UK for my vacation. They won't fire me right? as its not mandatory?

We do have to do camps as required by our schools - it's part of the basic EPIK contract.  Even though it is school vacation, your school still gets final approval of when you actually take your vacation so, yes, in theory, they could fire you if you don't show up for 5 consecutive days without approval.

How much vacation time do you have in your contract? With two months (essentially) between terms and most public school contracts giving 10 days winter vacation, how could you go home for 2 months anyhow? Even if it is a re-signing time and you get two extra weeks, that still leaves time open for camps.
Unless this is a Gangwon-do thing where you get extra vacation anyways I don't know that you could ever tell your school you're peacing out for two months.

Also, the camps are so students who may not go to hagwons during the year and aren't going to academy intensive courses get some extra English time too, so they'd really be the ones getting screwed over.

as people has probably already said, anytime that isn't either a) a weekend, b) a "red" day in the calendar or c) your official sanctioned holiday (signed off by the powers that be), is time spent at school.

so during winter vacation, i have ten days of vacation time - camps and the like get scheduled around that, and i work any time that i don't have vacation.
