Social info for new waeguks to Mokpo

Hello New Mokpo waeguks,

I've been here for about four months, and you can usually find me at any of the sporting events. We're all quite bad at the sports so if you're a first-timer you should fit right in and you'll probably even look good trying your hand at whatever sport.

So the cold weather hasn't really arrived yet so until then it looks like we'll all still be playing:

Jokku (soccer-based tennis game, with teams) Monday nights at 8pm
Soccer (half-court) Tuesday nights at 6pm
Bowling Wednesday nights at 6pm
Ultimate Frisbee Thursday nights at 6pm

If you're not already, you should try and get on the mailing list for game announcements. Ask a friend, or PM me if you want.

Some of the foreigners like to go to the foreigners bar, PBar(Hadang neighborhood) on Friday nights around 11pm or so. The four popular foreigner bars in Mokpo are:

Woodstock
PBar
Wa Bar
New York Bar

When the weather gets really cold, I'll be re-starting a board games cafe club that was somewhat popular in the summer.  Scrabble, chess (beginners, and I teach chess to newbies)

I'm also studying Korean so if you want to learn or if you have a Korean co-teacher who speaks too little English to help, I'm happy to help out with a translation or phrase here and there.

Welcome to Mokpo!

Emanuel

Hello! We are a couple from Texas. We're arriving in Mokpo next week. Can you tell me - are there any open mics at any of these foreigner bars?
I'm also wondering if there's a place to buy English books in town.
Thank you!

Hello Mr.Texas:

There was a bar that allowed their band to play. There is a bookstore, but it has a very poor English section. It's more like a shelf with some books in English noone reads. It would be better to order your books from whatthebook and have them delivered here before you arrived. You could send them to my school and pick them up anytime you want. Do not send stuff to your house.

Hi guys,

I'm new to Mokpo as well, but I've visited there before at least.  I lived in Suncheon, before.

The bookstore in question is near a place called "basic house" and you should be able to get a cab to take you there.  The books aren't THAT bad, but yes, ordering from whatthebook is a great idea. I don't know about Mokpo, but in Gwangju you should be able to get a gig at Speakeasy, and Suncheon sometimes has open mic nights at a place called the Billboard Palms.

See you around the Prado...

In Mokpo last year we had a band that played at Pclub (the place where most foreigners hang out).  I don't think the owner would care - he was pretty excited to have the band last year and if your music is semi decent (the band that played last year was, um, unique I guess...not great but not horrible and they did good covers) then I'm sure the foreigners wouldn't mind some live music.

And as for the bookstore....I prefer whatthebook.  Their delivery times/rates are good and prcies are good also.  If you buy 2 books you get free shipping so you can't go wrong with that and their selection is awesome.  Better than Hansol Bookstore (that's the name of the one in Mokpo) by far I feel.

And the sports post is sorta outdated.  We have a mass email list that won't be hard to join and then you'll get the lowdown on all the events too.
See you soon!

All right... thanks everyone for your answers!
We brought maybe twenty pounds of books with us, but I don't know how long that'll last...

I have some titles that may be of interest to you.  I also brought some books thinking that I'd be able to use it for classes, such as "Many Minds" an anthology of prose for senior students.  I was in for a reality check when I got here!  Some of my students are pretty sharp, and well versed in English literature (for Koreans anyway), but the majority have problems pronouncing simple words.
Carpe PM... ZzzzzZzzz ZzzzZzzz.
