Reading Relay Game
« on: September 29, 2011, 12:29:31 pm »
My co-teacher and I came up with this game and the kids really got excited.  We used it in our 6th grade class but I think it could work for any grade.

Basically you have two teams (A & B) per row of sentences.  We had sentences covering the key phrases from the chapter.  The sentences are put one on each desk on one side.  The teams line up on opposite ends of the sentence row.  When you say "GO" the first players from each team go down the line reading each sentence.  When they finish reading each sentence they have to smack the desk.  When the two players meet at the same sentence, they rock-paper-scissors.  If Team A's player is winner of rock-paper-scissors they get to continue down the sentence row.  The loser (Team B in this case) has to go back to the end of Team B's line and the 2nd Team B player gets to start.  Once Team A's player reaches Team B's side, the next Team A player starts.  The object is to get as many of your teammates to the other team's side.  We let the game go for about 5 or 10 minutes.

The nice part about this game was that it gets everyone to read and the weaker students get help from the stronger students.  Even my class that normally just stares at me and my co-teacher were engaged and reading during this game.  It worked really well for my students and made reading more exciting for them... at least it seemed to anyway.  I hope it works for someone else.

That is a great idea.

I usually do what has been dubbed "The Speed Game." Same sort of deal except the goal is to get the fastest time (I use a stop watch to clock them) going down the line. I use the sentences or dialogue from the book (no prep!). The kids sit there and read/speak several times to practice getting it PERFECT so they don't lose precious nanoseconds for their team. The weaker ones get help from myself or the stronger ones. I do whole sentences with grades 5 and 6; I do short sentences or individual words for grades 1-4. If they're really rambunctous, I have them stand up/sit down, which the younger ones really love. I usually use this second period as a warm up/ wake up call or fourth as a reading activity.

I like the desk slapping idea though. I will give your version a try! It seems like a good game for review.

Thanks for reminding me about this game. I teach a reading class and it has been getting very boring. This added some excitement to the lesson.
I have learned that they love anything to do with reading the fastest. I often do speed reading. I pick a short section and I time them as they read it. They get seconds added if they make a mistake and if the other teams are talking or fooling around I will give them a bonus and take away seconds.
I have a lot of students so we do a tournament. It takes a while but it's a nice treat sometimes.
